Objective: Shortening of the atrial effective refractory period (AERP) plays a major role in the maintenance of atrial fibrillation and the shortening of AERP is related to the gene expression of ion channels. Kv 1.5 is one of the most important potassium channels expressed on the surface of the human atrium, this topic will investigate the relation between the expression of Kv 1.5mRNA and AERP. Method: Right atrial appendages were obtained from patients under surgery, including the patients with chronic atrial fibrillation and sinus rhythm. Expression of Kv 1.5 mRNA was analyzed by RT-PCR. Result: The expression of Kv 1.5 mRNA in patients with atrial fibrillation decreased significantly (P< 0.01).Conclusion: The decreasing of the expression of Kv 1.5 mRNA might be the result of counteracting the shortening of AERP.
