A sample method for screening of cholesterol synthetic inhibitors from microorganisms was established. Named 89-17-Ⅲ, the secondary metabolite of strain SIPI-89-17, which was obtained by using this screening method was also reported.
The activity of 89-17-Ⅲ to inhibit cholesterol biosynthesis was determined. This compound also exhibited an inhibitory activity on the growth of some yeast strains.
The structure of the antibiotic 89-17-Ⅲ was elucidated by means of UV, IR, NMR(H and C) spectra and was identical with that of bisde-thiobis(methylthio)gliotoxin.
