The study area is at Minqin Desert Control Experiment Station located in the Shajingzi region in the southern marginal zone of the Badain Juran Desert, where it belongs to the typical arid desert climate, the annual, maximum and minimum temperatures are 7.68℃, 40.0℃ and -28.8℃ respectively; the annual precipitation and evaporation are 116.2 mm and 2 643.9 mm respectively, the average relative humidity is 51%, the aridity index is 5.3, and the frost-free period is 175 days; the average annual wind speed and sand-rising wind speed are 2.5 m/s and 5.0 m/s respectively; and the days of occurring strong winds, dust storms, blowing dusts and floating dusts are 26.3, 25, 37.5 and 29.7 days respectively. In this paper, an experimental study on regenerating the degenerated artificial forests of Haloxylon arnrnodendron Bge with the mechanical sand barriers is carried out at Minqin Desert Control Experiment Station. The results show that the roughness of underlaying surface under the degenerated forests of Haloxylon arnrnodendron Bge is increased as soon as the mechanical sand barriers are built in the forests, the wind speed and sand flux intensity at height of 0～20 cm is decreased, the mobile dunes can be fixed, and the wind erosion can be reduced. Moreover, the mechanical sand barriers can play a certain role in regenerating the degenerated artificial forests of Haloxylon arnrnodendron Bge and increasing soil moisture content, and they can be extensively applied in regenerating the degenerated vegetations in the marginal zone of oases. After comparing, it is considered that the sand-fixing effect of wheat straw breaks is the best in the first 2 years, but their service time is short, their annual cost is high, and their value coefficient is low; the sand-fixing effect of clay sand barriers is the poorest, their annual cost is the lowest, and their value coefficient is the highest; the sand-fixing effect, annual cost and value coefficient of plastic breaks are moderate among the 3 kinds of sand barriers.
