Objective： To know the basic characteristics and situation of medical disputes and try to find the preventive counter measures. Methods：Sum up, subdivide and analyze the 45 eases of medical disputes in the years 2003 and 2004. Results：Medical disputes, 57.7 % of all in a hospital, occur more frequently in the following departments： surgery, bone injury, gynecology ＆ obstetrics and emergency. And they cost 87.6% of the total expense for dealing with the disputes. The most frequently- used way of dealing with the disputes is negotiation between hospitals and the patients. It turns out that the causes of about 68.9 % of the disputes are connected with the qualifications of hospitals＇ personnel. Conclusion： In order to prevent and belittle medical disputes, protect legal rights of the medical workers and patients and ease up the relationship between them, we should encourage medical workers to upgrade their qualifications, improve their med- ical skills and service, enforce hospital＇ s management, perfect and implement various medical rules and regulations, communicate more between medical workers and patients and enhance medical workers＇ ideas of laws and awareness of legal rightprotection.
