The experiment of controlled roots divided alternative irrigation (CRAI) in maize showed that controlled 1/2 root region alternative irrigation could save 34.4%～ 36.8% water,and the biomass only decreased 6.2%～12%, when the lower water retention limit was 55%～65%. The difference of leaf area,leaf amount and water content were not significant between 1/2 CRAI and control.Water use efficiency of 1/2 CRAI was higher than that of 1/2 root divided continuous irrigation.Weight of dry root,root shoot ratio and basal diameter of stem increased and root was distributed evenly by alternative irrigation,but 1/2 root divided continuous irrigation did not have such effect.It is concluded that CARI is the practicable technology of water saving.
