Objective To describe and evaluate the MRI findings of extrahepatic biliary adenoma in order to explore the feasibility of the pre-operation diagnosis by MRI scanning. Methods Clinical data and findings of MRI in five patients with pathologically confirmed extrahepatic biliary adenoma were reviewed retrospectively. Results Three of the five cases were tubular villous adenoma histopathologically, one villous adenoma and one tubular adenoma. Two cases located in sec- tion extrahepatic biliary, one case located in middle extrahepatic biliary, two cases located in hypomere extrahepatic biliar- y. All the masses were demonstrated with a isointensity signal or slightly hyperintense on T2WI. Among five patients, there were three cases with slightly hyperintense, two isointensity. Three lesions were presented with an irregular margin- among all patients, two nearly round margin. Bile duct dilatation was found in five cases, and bile duct walls were smooth. Three cases of such lesions were eccentric expansion change in three cases. Conclusion The relative characteristic MRI findings for diagnosis of extrahepatic biliary adenoma include partial nature of growth, isointensity or slightly hyperintense on T2WI; most than Lesions margin is coarse. It would be helpful for improving the diagnostic accuracy while radiologists are getting aware of the features of extrahepatic biliary adenoma showed on MRI scanning.
