This paper studies the physical characteristics, economic character and the intrinsic chemical composition of the different number of remaining leaves of hurley tobacco TN 86. The results showed that with the increase in the number of remaining leaves, table leaf quality weight , single leaf weight and stem weight gradually decreased, both showing a trend of uppers 〉 cutters 〉 luggs. Stem ratio tended to decrease, showing a trend of luggs 〉 cutters 〉 uppers. When the remaining leaf number was 18 and 27 restpectively various parts of the leaf length, leaf width and leaf area were maximum and minimum. Reducing sugar and nicotine content had the trend of decreasing; nicotine content was higher when the remaining leaf number was 18 and 21, and in the appropriate range when it was 27, when the remaining leaf number was 24, it was the best; the total sugar content first decreased and then increased and nitrogen content first increased and then decreased; nitrogen/nicotine had the trend of increasing ; sugar/nicotine had the trend of increasing ; total sugar/reducing sugar had first increased and then decreased, when remained leaf number when the remaining leaf was 24, it was the highest. With the increase in the number of remaining leaves tobacco production tended to rise; the output and fine tobacco ratio increased first, and then decreased, the average price and proportion of middle ratio first decreased and then increased, and all reached the highest level when the remaining leaf number was 24. All the indicators considered, the remaining leaf number 24 was appropriate for burley TN 86.
