A white crystal was isolated from fermentation broth of Aspergillus terreus CA951. Based on spectral data of mass, UV, IR and NMR (H and C), this compound was proved identical to lovastatin reported in references, a cholesterol- lowering agent. A high-producing strain named CAN187 was attained from hundreds of mutant after treated by NTG.It gave 1.66 times the yield of the original strain. Shaking flask fermentation studies were done to observe the effects of different carbon, nitrogen sources, and quality of water to lovastatin production. Experiment in 500L fermentor was also done, with lovastatin yield of about 900mg/L.
