Antibacterial peptide, also known as host defense peptide,is a small peptide substances with broad-spectrum antimicrobial activity, and it is an important component of biological innate immunity.Studies have shown that antimicrobial peptides have anti-bacterial,antifungal,antiparasitic,antiviral,anti-cancer cells and immune regulation and other functions. Antibacterial peptides are not easy to produce drug resistance and are expected to become an effective alternative to antibiotics because of its completely different mechanism of action with antibiotics,so they are widely used in livestock and poultry production. The mechanism of antimicrobial peptides and its application effect in livestock production were reviewed in this paper. The prospect of antimicrobial peptides as antibiotic substitutes was discussed.
