Considering typical and representative of soil samples, two groups of expansive soil samples with differentphysical and mechanical properties were selected for indoor test. The effect of freeze-thaw cycle and verticalpressure on shear strength of expansive soil was studied through the indoor direct shear test. The resultsshow that the shear strength of expansive soil increases with the increase of the number of freezing and thawingcycles, but the increase is smaller, and the shear strength of expansive soil increases with the increase of verticalpressure. In order to quantify the effect of the number of freeze-thaw cycles, vertical pressure and their interactionon the shear strength of expansive soil, two-factor numerical variance analysis was used. The resultsshow that ： the effect of freezing-thawing cycle times and vertical pressure on the shear strength of expansivesoil is remarkable, and the interaction effect between the number of freezing and thawing cycles and verticalpressure is not significant, and the vertical pressure has the most notable effect on the shear strength of expansivesoil, followed by the number of freeze-thaw cycles.
