The microscopic characteristics and macro mechanical properties of phosphate rock tailings were studied by experiments in this paper. The composition, pore structure, particle structure, matric suction and shear strength of phosphate rock tailings are discussed. The porosity of tailings is mostly mesoporous.The hysteresis loops of adsorption desorption curves are relatively generous. The particle structure is characterized by continuous particle grading and particle size. It remains the single grain structure. The matrix suction of unsaturated tailings is very small. The slope of soil water characteristic curve of tailings varies greatly. And the water holding capacity is poor, so it is easy to dehydrate. With the increase of dry density, the shear strength of tailings increases under the same degree of saturation. With the decrease of saturation, the cohesion of the tailings remained basically unchanged, and the angle of internal friction increased slightly under the same density.
