Applications of advanced signal processing and machine learning in the neonatal hypoxic-ischemic electroencephalography 预览

Perinatal hypoxic-ischemic-encephalopathy significantly contributes to neonatal death and life-long disability such as cerebral palsy. Advances in signal processing and machine learning have provided the research community with an opportunity to develop automated real-time identification techniques to detect the signs of hypoxic-ischemic-encephalopathy in larger electroencephalography/amplitude-integrated electroencephalography data sets more easily. This review details the recent achievements, performed by a number of prominent research groups across the world, in the automatic identification and classification of hypoxic-ischemic epileptiform neonatal seizures using advanced signal processing and machine learning techniques. This review also addresses the clinical challenges that current automated techniques face in order to be fully utilized by clinicians, and highlights the importance of upgrading the current clinical bedside sampling frequencies to higher sampling rates in order to provide better hypoxic-ischemic biomarker detection frameworks. Additionally, the article highlights that current clinical automated epileptiform detection strategies for human neonates have been only concerned with seizure detection after the therapeutic latent phase of injury. Whereas recent animal studies have demonstrated that the latent phase of opportunity is critically important for early diagnosis of hypoxic-ischemic-encephalopathy electroencephalography biomarkers and although difficult, detection strategies could utilize biomarkers in the latent phase to also predict the onset of future seizures. 展开更多

以植被-生境学分类(vegetation-habitat classification system of grassland,VHCS)方法为基础的定性的中国草地分类系统,以及定量的气候-土地-植被综合顺序分类系统(comprehensive and sequential classification system of grassland,... 以植被-生境学分类(vegetation-habitat classification system of grassland,VHCS)方法为基础的定性的中国草地分类系统,以及定量的气候-土地-植被综合顺序分类系统(comprehensive and sequential classification system of grassland,CSCS)是我国常用的2大草地分类系统。在实际应用中,因"草原"和"草地"概念的重叠、混淆和交叉,以及定性分类和定量分类的差异,造成了操作上的困扰,研究结果亦不便相互交流。本研究通过2大系统一级单位-"类"的分类指标、名称和属性的对比,分析了2个系统"类"的兼容性,建立了两者间的对应关系,并利用基本同期的CSCS分类图和数字化的中国草地资源图(VHCS),以内蒙古自治区和甘肃省为例,在ArcGIS平台上进行了验证分析。研究结果表明:1)以广义草原或草地概念为基础的CSCS是一个大系统,兼容了以中国为例的VHCS分类系统;2)兼容VHCS的CSCS的类,两者在分类指标、名称和属性方面均能达到统一;3)空间叠置分析表明,若不考虑森林和非地带性类,内蒙古和甘肃区域2个分类系统分类结果的兼容性分别达到61.4%和61.1%;有差异的区域,基本上表现出草地实际调查结果(VHCS)是比原生潜在草地(CSCS)在更恶劣气候条件下的低分类级别的草地类,说明人为干扰已超过了原生草地生态系统的生存阈限,导致草地逆行演替;4)对CSCS与VHCS分类结果的对比分析研究,可科学地揭示人为干扰下草地的演替状态,并明确草地恢复和重建的目标。 展开更多

Classification of gene expression data is a pivotal research area that plays a substantial role in diagnosis and prediction of diseases. Generally, feature selection is one of the extensively used techniques in data mining approaches, especially in classification. Gene expression data are usually composed of dozens of samples characterized by thousands of genes. This increases the dimensionality coupled with the existence of irrelevant and redundant features. Accordingly, the selection of informative genes (features) becomes difficult, which badly affects the gene classification accuracy. In this paper, we consider the feature selection for classifying gene expression microarray datasets. The goal is to detect the most possibly cancer-related genes in a distributed manner, which helps in effectively classifying the samples. Initially, the available huge amount of considered features are subdivided and distributed among several processors. Then, a new filter selection method based on a fuzzy inference system is applied to each subset of the dataset. Finally, all the resulted features are ranked, then a wrapper-based selection method is applied. Experimental results showed that our proposed feature selection technique performs better than other techniques since it produces lower time latency and improves classification performance. 展开更多

We present a novel sea-ice classification framework based on locality preserving fusion of multi-source images information.The locality preserving fusion arises from two-fold,i.e.,the local characterization in both spatial and feature domains.We commence by simultaneously learning a projection matrix,which preserves spatial localities,and a similarity matrix,which encodes feature similarities.We map the pixels of multi-source images by the projection matrix to a set fusion vectors that preserve spatial localities of the image.On the other hand,by applying the Laplacian eigen-decomposition to the similarity matrix,we obtain another set of fusion vectors that preserve the feature local similarities.We concatenate the fusion vectors for both spatial and feature locality preservation and obtain the fusion image.Finally,we classify the fusion image pixels by a novel sliding ensemble strategy,which enhances the locality preservation in classification.Our locality preserving fusion framework is effective in classifying multi-source sea-ice images(e.g.,multi-spectral and synthetic aperture radar(SAR)images)because it not only comprehensively captures the spatial neighboring relationships but also intrinsically characterizes the feature associations between different types of sea-ices.Experimental evaluations validate the effectiveness of our framework. 展开更多

Although compressive measurements save data storage and bandwidth usage, they are difficult to be used directly for target tracking and classification without pixel reconstruction. This is because the Gaussian random matrix destroys the target location information in the original video frames. This paper summarizes our research effort on target tracking and classification directly in the compressive measurement domain. We focus on one particular type of compressive measurement using pixel subsampling. That is, original pixels in video frames are randomly subsampled. Even in such a special compressive sensing setting, conventional trackers do not work in a satisfactory manner. We propose a deep learning approach that integrates YOLO (You Only Look Once) and ResNet (residual network) for multiple target tracking and classification. YOLO is used for multiple target tracking and ResNet is for target classification. Extensive experiments using short wave infrared (SWIR), mid-wave infrared (MWIR), and long-wave infrared (LWIR) videos demonstrated the efficacy of the proposed approach even though the training data are very scarce. 展开更多

Trang Bang is the largest agricultural production district of TayNinh province, Vietnam that has a great influence on the socio-economic development of the whole province. This study assessed land use - land cover change in Trang Bang district from 1995 to 2017, the results provide scientific evidence for the safe and effective identification of causes and safeguards for mulch. The study was conducted by an expert classification system and the land use/land cover (LULC) was classified into 6 classes: food-crops, fruit-tree, water, built-up, industry and shrub. The result showed that the LULC there decreased between 1995 and 2017. All the two land cover types (food-crops, fruit-tree) decreased 141.2 km2 (41.4%) in 2017 compared with 1995, while the area of industrial and urban land (industry, built-up) increased 70.0 km2 (20.6%). The overall classification accuracies in 1995, 2007, and 2017 were 94.2%, 98.0%, and 96.3% respectively. The overall kappa coefficients for the image classification were 0.90, 0.97, and 0.94 in 1995, 2007, and 2017 respectively. In general, the average classification was above 90%, and this proved that the classification was reliable and acceptable. The result show that the LULC in the study area decreased during 1997-2017 and tended to decrease in recent years. 展开更多

In this work, a deep belief neural network model (DBN) was developed to classify doves, chickens, mice and sheep blood samples, which have many similarities in composition causing their spectra to look almost identical by visual comparison alone. The DBN model was formulated for the feature extraction from the pretreated fluorescence spectroscopy. Then, cross-validation results showed that the application of deep learning method made it possible to classify the blood fluorescence spectroscopy in a more precise way than previous methods. Especially, the classification accuracy of whole blood with 1% of concentration was up to 97.5%. 展开更多

Because of the increasing attention on environmental issues, especially air pollution, predicting whether a day is polluted or not is necessary to people’s health. In order to solve this problem, this research is classifying ground ozone level based on big data and machine learning models, where polluted ozone day has class 1 and non-ozone day has class 0. The dataset used in this research was derived from the UCI Website, containing various environmental factors in Houston, Galveston and Brazoria area that could possibly affect the occurrence of ozone pollution [1]. This dataset is first filled up for further process, next standardized to ensure every feature has the same weight, and then split into training set and testing set. After this, five different machine learning models are used in the prediction of ground ozone level and their final accuracy scores are compared. In conclusion, among Logistic Regression, Decision Tree, Random Forest, AdaBoost, and Support Vector Machine (SVM), the last one has the highest test score of 0.949. This research utilizes relatively simple methods of forecasting and calculates the first accuracy scores in predicting ground ozone level;it can thus be a reference for environmentalists. Moreover, the direct comparison among five different models provides machine learning field an insight to determine the most accurate model. In the future, Neural Network can also be utilized to predict air pollution, and its test scores can be compared with the previous five methods to conclude the accuracy of Neuron Network. 展开更多

The exploitation of systems using solar energy as a source of energy is not fluctuations free because of short passage of clouds on solar radiation. The amplitude, the persistence and the frequency of these fluctuations should be analyzed with appropriate tools, instead of focusing on their location over time. The analysis of these fluctuations should use the instantaneous clearness index whose distribution is given as a first approximation which is independent not only of the season but also of the site. It is important to evaluate the potential solar energy in a region. Indeed such evaluation helps the decision-makers in their reflections on agricultural or photovoltaic solar projects. Then this study was conducted for a predictive purpose. The method used in our work combines the classification method which is the hierarchical ascending classification and two partitioning methods, the principal component?analysis and the K-means method. The partitioning method enabled to?achieve a number of well-known situations (in advance) that are representative of the day. The study was based on the data of a climatic weather station in the district of Yamoussoukro located in the center region of C&ocirc;te d’Ivoire during the 2017 year. Using the clearness index, the study allowed the classification of the solar radiation in the region. Thus, it showed that only 346 days of the 365 days in 2017 were classified (95%). We identified three clusters of days, the cloudy sky (29%), the partly cloudy sky?(32%) and the clear sky (39%). The statistical tests used for the characterization?of these clusters will be detailed in a future study. 展开更多

AIM To establish an appropriate N classification system for early gastric cancer(EGC).METHODS Data from 10714 patients who underwent radical gastrectomy between 1988 and 2011 were retrieved from the National Cancer Institute’s Surveillance,Epidemiology,and End Result database.The overall survival(OS)based on the eighth edition and new tumor lymph node metastasis(TNM)staging systems were compared,and the analysis was repeated in an external validation set from the Fujian Medical University Union Hospital database.RESULTS There were no significant differences in OS between N1 and N2 cancers or between N3a and N3b cancers in cases of EGC.The X-tile program identified that the new staging system for EGC consisted of T1N0,T1N1’[1-6 metastatic lymph nodes(LNs)],and T1N2’(≥7 metastatic LNs).Compared with the eighth edition of the TNM staging system,the OS of patients in T1N1’stage was similar to that of patients with stage IIA disease,whereas the OS of patients in T1N2’stage was similar to that of patients with stage IIB disease.The new TNM staging system exhibited a slightly lower Akaike Information Criterion value and higher χ^2 and c-statistic compared with the eighth edition of the TNM classification system.Similar results were found in the external validation dataset from the external validation set.CONCLUSION We have developed an optional new TNM staging system with a better predictive ability that can be used to accurately predict the 5-year OS of patients with EGC. 展开更多
