ROCO:Using a Solid State Drive Cache to Improve the Performance of a Host-Aware Shingled Magnetic Recording Drive

Shingled magnetic recording (SMR)can effectively increase the capacity of hard disk drives (HDDs).Hostaware SMR (HA-SMR)is expected to be more popular than other SMR models because of its backward compatibility and new SMR-specific APIs.However,an HA-SMR drive often suffers performance degradation under write-intensive workloads because of frequent non-sequential writes buffered in the disk cache.The non-sequential writes mainly come from update writes,small random writes and out-of-order writes.In this paper,we propose a hybrid storage system called ROCO which aims to use a solid state drive (SSD)cache to improve the performance of an HA-SMR drive.ROCO reorders out-of-order writes belonging to the same zone and uses the SSD cache to absorb update writes and small random writes.We also design a data replacement algorithm called CREA for the SSD cache.CREA first conducts zone-oriented hot/cold data identification to identify cold-cached zones and hot-cached zones,and then evicts data blocks belonging to colder zones with higher priorities that can be sequentially written or written through host-side read-modify-write operations.It gives the lowest priority to data blocks belonging to the hottest-cached zone that have to be non-sequentially written.Experimental results show that ROCO can effectively reduce non-sequential writes to the HA-SMR drive and improve the performance of the HA-SMR drive. 展开更多

According to the requirements of vehicle performance indicators, the parameters of vehicle power drive system including engine, ISG motor, battery and related power transmission system were designed;the basic control strategy of ISG moderate hybrid electric vehicle was put forward;the dynamic model of vehicle was established by using MATLAB/Simulink software platform, and the vehicle performance was simulated under selected cycle conditions. The simulation results show that the parameter matching of the drive system is reasonable, the power performance of the vehicle meets the corresponding requirements, and the fuel economy has been significantly improved. 展开更多

Successive Picket Drive for Mitigating the Ablative Richtmyer–Meshkov Instability

The ablative Richtmyer–Meshkov instability(ARMI)is crucial to the successful ignition implosion of the inertial confinement fusion(ICF)because of its action as the seed of the Rayleigh–Taylor instability.In usual ICF implosions,the first shock driven by various foots of the pulses plays a central role in the ARMI growth.We propose a new scheme for refraining from ARMI with a pulse of successive pickets.With the successive-picket pulse design,a rippled capsule surface is compressed by three successive shocks with sequentially strengthening intensities and ablated stabilization,and the ablative Richtmyer–Meshkov growth is mitigated quite effectively.Our numerical simulations and theoretical analyses identify the validity of this scheme. 展开更多

This paper performs nonlinear high gain observer design based on the full-order model of the induction motor. Such an effort appears nontrivial due to the fact that the full-model at best admits locally a non-triangular observable form(NTOF), and its analytical representation in the NTOF can not be obtained. This paper proposes an approximate high gain estimation algorithm, which enjoys a constructive design, ease of tuning, and improved speed estimation and tracking performance. Reliability and Availability Models of Belt Drive Systems Considering Failure Dependence

Conventional reliability models of belt drive systems in the failure mode of fatigue are mainly based on the static stress strength interference model and its extended models, which cannot consider dynamic factors in the operational duration and be used for further availability analysis. In this paper, time-dependent reliability models, failure rate models and availability models of belt drive systems are developed based on the system dynamic equations with the dynamic stress and the material property degradation taken into account. In the proposed models, dynamic failure dependence and imperfect maintenance are taken into consideration. Furthermore, the issue of time scale inconsistency between system failure rate and system availability is proposed and addressed in the proposed system availability models. Besides, Monte Carlo simulations are carried out to validate the established models. The results from the proposed models and those from the Monte Carlo simulations show a consistency. Furthermore, the case studies show that the failure dependence, imperfect maintenance and the time scale inconsistency have significant influences on system availability. The independence assumption about the belt drive systems results in underestimations of both reliability and availability. Moreover, the neglect of the time scale inconsistency causes the underestimate of the system availability. Meanwhile, these influences show obvious time-dependent characteristics. 展开更多

Solid-state drives (SSDs)have been widely used as caching tier for disk-based RAID systems to speed up dataintensive applications.However,traditional cache schemes fail to effectively boost the parity-based RAID storage sys- tems (e.g.,RAID-5/6),which have poor random write performance due to the small-write problem.What's worse,intensive cache writes can wear out the SSD quickly,which causes performance degradation and cost increment.In this article,we present the design and implementation of KDD, an efficient SSD-based caching system which Keeps Data and Deltas in SSD.When write requests hit in the cache, KDD dispatches the data to the RAID storage without updating the parity blocks to mitigate the small write penalty, and compactly stores the compressed deltas in SSD to reduce the cache write traffic while guaranteeing reliability in case of disk failures.In addition,KDD organizes the metadata partition on SSD as a circular log to make the cache persistent with low overhead.We evaluate the performance of KDD via both simulations and prototype implementations.Experimental results show that KDD effectively reduces the small write penalty while extending the lifetime of the SSD-based cache by up to 6.85 times. 展开更多

Modern solid-state drives (SSDs)are integrating more internal resources to achieve higher capacity.Parallelizing accesses across internal resources can potentially enhance the performance of SSDs.However,exploiting parallelism inside SSDs is challenging owing to real-time access conflicts.In this paper,we propose a highly parallelizable I/O scheduler (PIOS)to improve internal resource utilization in SSDs from the perspective of I/O scheduling.Specifically, we first pinpoint the conflicting flash requests with precision during the address translation in the Flash Translation Layer (FTL).Then,we introduce conflict eliminated requests (CERs)to reorganize the I/O requests in the device-level queue by dispatching conflicting flash requests to different CERs.Owing to the significant performance discrepancy between flash read and write operations,PIOS employs differentiated scheduling schemes for read and write CER queues to always allocate internal resources to the conflicting CERs that are more valuable.The small dominant size prioritized scheduling policy for the write queue significantly decreases the average write latency.The high parallelism density prioritized scheduling policy for the read queue better utilizes resources by exploiting internal parallelism aggressively.Our evaluation results show that the paralle/izable I/O scheduler (PIOS)can accomplish better SSD performance than existing I/O schedulers implemented in both SSD devices and operating systems. 展开更多

Extending SSD Lifespan with Comprehensive Non-Volatile Memory-Based Write Buffers

New non-volatile memory (NVM)technologies are expected to replace main memory DRAM (dynamic random access memory)in the near future.NAND flash technological breakthroughs have enabled wide adoption of solid state drives (SSDs)in storage systems.However,flash-based SSDs,by nature,cannot avoid low endurance problems because each cell only allows a limited number of erasures.This can give rise to critical SSD reliability issues.Since many SSD write operations eventually cause many SSD erase operations,reducing SSD write traffic plays a crucial role in SSD reliability. This paper proposes two NVM-based buffer cache policies which can work together in different layers to maximally reduce SSD write traffic:a main memory buffer cache design named Hierarchical Adaptive Replacement Cache (H-ARC)and an internal SSD write buffer design named Write Traffic Reduction Buffer (WRB).H-ARC considers four factors (dirty,clean, recency,and frequency)to reduce write traffic and improve cache hit ratios in the host.WRB reduces block erasures and write traffic further inside an SSD by effectively exploiting temporal and spatial localities.These two comprehensive schemes significantly reduce total SSD write traffic at each different layer (i.e.,host and SSD)by up to 3x.Consequently,they help extend SSD lifespan without system performance degradation. 展开更多
