The realization that body parts of animals and plants can be recruited or coopted for novel functions dates back to,or even predates the observations of Darwin.S.J.Gould and E.S.Vrba recognized a mode of evolution of characters that differs from adaptation.The umbrella term aptation was supplemented with the concept of exaptation.Unlike adaptations,which are restricted to features built by selection for their current role,exaptations are features that currently enhance fitness,even though their present role was not a result of natural selection.Exaptations can also arise from nonaptations;these are characters which had previously been evolving neutrally.All nonaptations are potential exaptations.The concept of exaptation was expanded to the molecular genetic level which aided greatly in understanding the enormous potential of neutrally evolving repetitive DNA-including transposed elements,formerly considered junk DNA-for the evolution of genes and genomes.The distinction between adaptations and exaptations is outlined in this review and examples are given.Also elaborated on is the fact that such distinctions are sometimes more difficult to determine;this is a widespread phenomenon in biology,where continua abound and clear borders between states and definitions are rare. 展开更多

Maize(Zea mays L.) yield depends not only on the conversion and accumulation of carbohydrates in kernels, but also on the supply of carbohydrates by leaves. However, the carbon metabolism process in leaves can vary across different leaf regions and during the day and night. Hence, we used Weighted Gene Co-expression Network analysis(WGCNA) with the gene expression profiles of carbon metabolism to identify the modules and genes that may associate with particular regions in a leaf and time of day. There were a total of 45 samples of maize leaves that were taken from three different regions of a growing maize leaf at five time points. Robust Multi-array Average analysis was used to pre-process the raw data of GSE85963(accession number), and quality control of data was based on Pearson correlation coefficients. We obtained eight co-expression network modules. The modules with the highest significance of association with LeafRegion and TimePoint were selected. Functional enrichment and gene-gene interaction analyses were conducted to acquire the hub genes and pathways in these significant modules. These results can support the findings of similar studies by providing evidence of potential module genes and enriched pathways associated with leaf development in maize. 展开更多

Wheat high-molecular-weight glutenin subunits(HMW-GS)determine dough elasticity and play an essential role in processing quality.HMW-GS are encoded by Glu-1 genes and controlled primarily at transcriptional level,implemented through the interactions between cis-acting elements and trans-acting factors.However,transcriptional mechanismof Glu-1 genes remains elusive.Here we made a comprehensive analysis of cis-regulatory elements within 1-kb upstream of the Glu-1 start codon(-1000 to-1)and identified 30 conserved motifs.Based on motif distribution pattern,three conserved cis-regulatory modules(CCRMs),CCRM1(-300 to-101),CCRM2(-650 to-400),and CCRM3(-950 to-750),were defined,and their functions were characterized in wheat stable transgenic lines transformed with progressive 5′deletion promoter::GUS fusion constructs.GUS staining,qPCR and enzyme activity assays indicated that CCRM2 and CCRM3 could enhance the expression level of Glu-1,whereas the 300-bp promoter(-300 to-1),spanning CCRM1 and core region(-100 to-1),was enough to ensure accurate Glu-1 initiation at 7 days after flowering(DAF)and shape its spatiotemporal expression pattern during seed development.Further transgenic assays demonstrated that CCRM1-2(-300 to-209)containing CompleteHMWEnhancer(-246 to-209)was important for expression level but had no effect on expression specificity in the endosperm.In contrast,CCRM1-1(-208 to-101)was critical for both expression specificity and level of Glu-1.Our findings not only provide new insights to uncover Glu-1 transcription regulatory machinery but also lay foundations for modifying Glu-1 expression. 展开更多

This study was a... BACKGROUND: Small antral follicles as the final reserve of folliculogenesis, are existed throughout the reproductive lifespan of sheep. However, the ovarian cycles of ewe cease in the anestrus phase. This study was aimed to elucidate the ovariansmall antral follicles transcriptome in the ewe's anestrus phase.METHODS: Granulosa cells of small antral follicles (≤3 mm) were collected from two groups of Mehraban ewes under longdays of summer in the non-breeding season as anestrus phase. Transcriptome profiling of these granulosa cells were obtainedusing the RNA-Seq technology. An integrative analysis was utilized to identify key regulatory genes which may have potentialimpacts on intra-ovarian molecular activities.RESULTS: Globally, 14506 genes were expressed whose higher expressions belonged to genes that encoded ribosomalproteins. Top significant terms of gene ontology were pertained to protein translational processes. Apart of this, most of highlysignificant terms were also relevant to apoptotic process through extracellular vesicles, including apoptotic bodies andexosomes. Regarding to node effect property, UBA52 (ubiquitin A-52 residue ribosomal protein fusion product 1) and RPS5(ribosomal proteins S5) contained in highest out-degree and in-degree, respectively.CONCLUSION: Our data suggest that ribosomal mRNA/proteins could make the granulosa cells undergo a lot of changesfrom the point of view that ovarian activities are ceased in the anestrus phase. 展开更多

[目的] 通过对濒危植物水青树的生殖配置进行研究,探讨其生殖与生存之间的权衡关系,揭示其生活史对策及其濒危机制。[方法] 对固定样地内的不同径级水青树个体的标准生殖枝生物量进行观测,对不同径级个体的差异采用多重比较分析,对生殖配置(RA)、生殖构件与营养构件生物量采用相关性分析和线性回归分析,对种子数量与千粒质量进行相关性分析。[结果] (1)随径级的增大,水青树的生殖和营养投入呈现同增同减的趋势,没有明显的权衡关系;(2)水青树的生殖分配(RA)随径级的变化呈现先上升后下降的趋势;(3)水青树的生殖投入与营养投入、叶生物量之间呈显著正相关,而其RA与营养投入、叶生物量之间呈显著负相关;(4)生殖构件各组分中,种子生物量所占比重均为最小,且远远低于生殖的附属结构(果序轴和果皮);种子数与种子大小之间存在权衡关系。[结论] 在构件水平上,水青树的营养投入对生殖投入具有促进作用;其生殖期可划分为生殖初始期、生殖增长期、生殖高峰期和生殖衰退期等4个时期;其种子特征在生殖不同时期分别采取不同的生活史对策,可能是水青树在长期演化发展过程中形成的生殖适应性对策。 展开更多

Progresses in photovoltaic technologies over the past years are evident from the lower costs, the rising efficiency, to the great improvements in system reliability and yield. Cumulative installed power yearly growths were on an average more than 40% in the period from 2007 to 2016 and in 2016, the global cumulative photovoltaic power installed has reached 320 GWp. The level 0.5 TWp could be reached before 2020. The production processes in the solar industry still have great potential for optimization both wafer based and thin film technologies. Trends following from the present technology levels are discussed, also taking into account other parts of photovoltaic systems that influence the cost of electrical energy produced. Present developments in the three generations of photovoltaic modules are discussed along with the criteria for the selection of appropriate photovoltaic module manufacturing technologies. The wafer based crystalline silicon (csilicon)technologies have the role of workhorse of present photovoltaic power generation, representing more than 90% of total module production. Further technology improvements have to be implemented without significantly increasing costs per unit, despite the necessarily more complex manufacturing processes involved. The tandem of c-silicon and thin film cells is very promising. Durability may be a limiting factor of this technology due to the dependence of the produced electricity cost on the module service time. 展开更多
