Study of neutron dose equivalent at the HIRFL deep tumor therapy terminal

The secondary neutron fields at the deep tumor therapy terminal at HIRFL(Heavy Ion Research Facility in Lanzhou) were investigated. The distributions of neutron ambient dose equivalent were measured with a FHT762Wendi-II neutron ambient dose equivalent meter as ~(12)C ions with energies of 165, 207, 270, and 350 Me V/u were bombarded on thick tissue-like targets. The thickness of targets used in the experiments was larger than the range of the carbon ions. The neutron spectra and dose equivalent were simulated by using FLUKA code, and the results agree well with the experimental data. The experiment results showed that the neutron dose produced by fragmentation reactions in tissue can be neglected in carbon-ion therapy, even considering their enhanced biological effectiveness.These results are also valuable for radiation protection, especially in the shielding design of high energy heavy ion medical machines. 展开更多

A detector setup for the measurement of angular distribution of heavy-ion elastic scattering at energies around Coulomb barrier on the radioactive ion beam line in Lanzhou at the heavy-ion research facility in Lanzhou is designed.The beam profile and the scattering angles on the target are deduced by two parallel plate avalanche counters,and four sets of detector telescopes(including doublesided silicon strip detectors) are placed systematically with the beam line,incorporating with Monte Carlo simulations.The data of ~(16)O on ~(89)Y target were analyzed to compare with the simulation results.It is found that the simulated distribution is agreeable with the experimental data.By assuming the pure Rutherford scattering at small scattering angles,the angular distribution of elastic scattering of~(16)O+~(89)Y at low energies can be reasonably obtained.It indicates that this set of detector setup can be used for the measurement of angular distributions of heavy-ion elastic scattering at energies around Coulomb barrier. 展开更多

A trigger system was designed for the external target experiment in the Cooling Storage Ring(CSR)of the Heavy Ion Research Facility in Lanzhou(HIRFL).Considering that different detectors are scattered over a large area,the trigger system is designed based on a master-slave structure and fiber-based serial data transmission technique.The trigger logic is organized in hierarchies,and flexible reconfiguration of the trigger function is achieved based on command register access or overall field-programmable gate array(FPGA) logic on-line reconfiguration controlled by remote computers.We also conducted tests to confirm the function of the trigger electronics,and the results indicate that this trigger system works well. 展开更多

A kicker control system is used for beam extraction and injection between two cooling storage rings(CSRs) at the Heavy Ion Research Facility in Lanzhou(HIRFL). To meet the requirements of special physics experiments, the kicker controller has been upgraded, with a new controller designed based on ARM+DSP+FPGA technology and monolithic circuit architecture, which can achieve a precision time delay of 2.5 ns. In September2014, the new kicker control system was installed in the kicker field, and the test experiment using the system was completed. In addition, a pre-trigger signal was provided by the controller, which was designed to synchronize the beam diagnostic system and physics experiments. Experimental results indicate that the phenomena of "missed kick"and "inefficient kick" were not observed, and the multichannel trigger signal delay could be adjusted individually for kick power supplies in digitization; thus, the beam transport efficiency was improved compared with that of the original system. The fast extraction and injection experiment was successfully completed based on the new kicker control systems for HIRFL. 展开更多

After the presentation of comparisons between calculated spallation neutron production doubledifferential cross sections and the available experimental data, a detailed description of the NTOF spectrometer is given. Single event effects(SEEs) induced by radiations become a significant challenge to the reliability for modern electronic systems. To evaluate SEEs susceptibility for microelectronic devices and integrated circuits(ICs), an SEE testing system with flexibility and robustness was developed at Heavy Ion Research Facility in Lanzhou(HIRFL). The system is compatible with various types of microelectronic devices and ICs, and supports plenty of complex and high-speed test schemes and plans for the irradiated devices under test(DUTs). Thanks to the combination of meticulous circuit design and the hardened logic design, the system has additional performances to avoid an overheated situation and irradiations by stray radiations. The system has been tested and verified by experiments for irradiating devices at HIRFL. 展开更多

Conceptional design of a heavy ion linac injector for HIRFL-CSRm

A room temperature heavy ion linac has been proposed as a new injector of the main Cooler Storage Ring(CSRm) at the Heavy Ion Research Facility in Lanzhou(HIRFL), which is expected to improve the performance of HIRFL.... A room temperature heavy ion linac has been proposed as a new injector of the main Cooler Storage Ring(CSRm) at the Heavy Ion Research Facility in Lanzhou(HIRFL), which is expected to improve the performance of HIRFL. The linac injector can supply heavy ions with a maximum mass to charge ratio of 7 and an injection kinetic energy of 7.272 MeV/u for CSRm; the pulsed beam intensity is 3 emA with the duty factor of 3%. Compared with the present cyclotron injector, the Sector Focusing Cyclotron(SFC), the beam current from linac can be improved by 10–100 times. As the pre-accelerator of the linac, the 108.48 MHz 4-rod Radio Frequency Quadrupole(RFQ) accelerates the ion beam from 4 keV/u to 300 keV/u, which achieves the transmission efficiency of 95.3% with a 3.07 m long vane.The phase advance has been taken into account in the analysis of the error tolerance, and parametric resonances have been carefully avoided by adjusting the structure parameters. Kombinierte Null Grad Struktur Interdigital H-mode Drift Tube Linacs(KONUS IH-DTLs), which follow the RFQ, accelerate ions up to the energy of 7.272 MeV/u for CSRm. The resonance frequency is 108.48 MHz for the first two cavities and 216.96 MHz for the last 5 Drift Tube Linacs(DTLs). The maximum accelerating gradient can reach 4.95 MV/m in a DTL section with the length of17.066 m, and the total pulsed RF power is 2.8 MW. A new strategy, for the determination of resonance frequency,RFQ vane voltage and DTL effective accelerating voltage, is described in detail. 随着核科学技术的发展,人们发现质子和重离子的深度剂量分布非常适合于治疗肿瘤,重离子束成为21世纪放疗领域中最为先进和有效的方法。重离子束治疗肿瘤技术和装备的研究已引起许多国家政府和相关领域科学家的高度重视。中国科学院近... 随着核科学技术的发展,人们发现质子和重离子的深度剂量分布非常适合于治疗肿瘤,重离子束成为21世纪放疗领域中最为先进和有效的方法。重离子束治疗肿瘤技术和装备的研究已引起许多国家政府和相关领域科学家的高度重视。中国科学院近代物理研究所(以下简称“近代物理所”)自20世纪90年代起基于兰州重离子研究装置提供的中能重离子束,在国家“九五”攀登计划(B)项目“重离子治癌技术的研究”的支持下,进行了放射物理、放射生物学实验以及治疗肿瘤技术的基础研究,完成了从分子、细胞和动物整体层面对重离子束治疗肿瘤的有效性和安全性的评价,并证实了其机理。同时,通过动物辐照实验,获得了不同组织器官对重离子束辐照的耐受剂量和荷瘤动物肿瘤控制所需治疗剂量等数据,为重离子束治疗肿瘤的临床研究奠定了基础。在此基础上,近代物理所利用同步加速器HIRFL-CSR的全身肿瘤治疗终端于2009年3月到2013年7月共进行了110例深层肿瘤患者的治疗,其中大部分为常规治疗(手术、放疗、化疗)复发和/或无效的病例,取得了明显效果;确定了一些新的重离子束治疗适应症,并确定了10~12次短疗程法;制定和优化了人体深部肿瘤治疗计划,建立了剂量分布精细测量系统。研究成果产生了较大的国际影响和巨大的社会效益。 展开更多

A prototype of the forward tracking array consisting of three multiwire drift chambers(MWDC) for the external target experiment(CEE) at the Heavy Ion Research Facility at the Lanzhou-Cooling Storage Ring(HIRFL-CSR) has been assembled and tested using cosmic rays. The signals from the anode wires are amplified and fed to a Flash-ADC to deliver the drift time and charge integration. The performances of the array prototype are investigated under various high voltages. For the tracking performances, after the space-time relation(STR)calibration and the detector displacement correction, the standard deviation of 223 μm of the residue is obtained.The performances of the forward MWDCs tracking array meets the requirements of CEE in design. 展开更多

Impact of temperature on single event upset measurement by heavy ions in SRAM devices

The temperature dependence of single event upset(SEU) measurement both in commercial bulk and silicon on insulator(SOI) static random access memories(SRAMs) has been investigated by experiment in the Heavy Ion Research Facility in Lanzhou(HIRFL). For commercial bulk SRAM, the SEU cross section measured by 12C ions is very sensitive to the temperature. The temperature test of SEU in SOI SRAM was conducted by 209Bi and 12C ions, respectively, and the SEU cross sections display a remarkable growth with the elevated temperature for 12C ions but keep constant for 209Bi ions. The impact of temperature on SEU measurement was analyzed by Monte Carlo simulation. It is revealed that the SEU cross section is significantly affected by the temperature around the threshold linear energy transfer of SEU occurrence. As the SEU occurrence approaches saturation, the SEU cross section gradually exhibits less temperature dependency. Based on this result, the experimental data measured in HIRFL was analyzed, and then a reasonable method of predicting the on-orbit SEU rate was proposed. 展开更多

<正>Gamma Ray Array Detector(GRAD) is one of external target facility subsystems in the Cooling Storage Ring on the Heavy Ion Research Facility at Lanzhou(HIRFL-CSR).The trigger subsystem of GRAD is required to ... <正>Gamma Ray Array Detector(GRAD) is one of external target facility subsystems in the Cooling Storage Ring on the Heavy Ion Research Facility at Lanzhou(HIRFL-CSR).The trigger subsystem of GRAD is required to make a fast L1 trigger decision with a fixed latency for the data acquisition.Because the hit signals from the detector are asynchronous with the local clock of the trigger system,a nondeterministic latency(the value changes between zero and one clock period) is generated when the synchronous receivers of the conventional trigger system process the hit signals.In this paper,an improved trigger logic based on a field-programmable gate array is developed,and comprised of zero-delay broadening circuits as receivers and an improved adding circuit designed for the new receivers.Software simulation and experimental measurement have been conducted.Comparison with the conventional trigger logic,the improved trigger logic has the advantage of eliminating the nondeterministic latency and reducing the total processing latency. 展开更多

The feasibility of attaining nanosecond pulse length heavy ion beam is studied in the main ring (CSRm) of the Heavy Ion Research Facility in Lanzhou. Such heavy ion beam can be produced by non-adiabatic compression, and it is implemented by a fast rotation in the longitudinal phase space. In this paper, the possible beam parameters during longitudinal bunch compression are studied with the envelope model and Particle in Cell simulation, and the results are compared. The result shows that the short bunch 238U28+ with the pulse duration of about 50 ns at the energy of 200 MeV/u can be obtained which can satisfy the research of high density plasma physics experiment. 展开更多

The Gamma Ray Array Detector(GRAD) is one subsystem of HIRFL-ETF(the External Target Facility(ETF) of the Heavy Ion Research Facility in Lanzhou(HIRFL)).It is capable of measuring the energy of gamma-rays with 1024 CsI scintillators in in-beam nuclear experiments.The GRAD trigger should select the valid events and reject the data from the scintillators which are not hit by the gamma-ray.The GRAD trigger has been developed based on the Field Programmable Gate Array(FPGAs) and PXI interface.It makes prompt trigger decisions to select valid events by processing the hit signals from the 1024 CsI scintillators.According to the physical requirements,the GRAD trigger module supplies 12-bit trigger information for the global trigger system of ETF and supplies a trigger signal for data acquisition(DAQ) system of GRAD.In addition,the GRAD trigger generates trigger data that are packed and transmitted to the host computer via PXI bus to be saved for of-line analysis.The trigger processing is implemented in the front-end electronics of GRAD and one FPGA of the GRAD trigger module.The logic of PXI transmission and reconfiguration is implemented in another FPGA of the GRAD trigger module.During the gamma-ray experiments,the GRAD trigger performs reliably and efciently.The function of GRAD trigger is capable of satisfying the physical requirements. 展开更多

The SSC-linac(a new injector for the Separated Sector Cyclotron) is being designed in the HIRFL(Heavy Ion Research Facility in Lanzhou) system to accelerate 238U34+ from 3.72 keV/u to 1.008 MeV/u.As a part of the SSC-linac injector,the HEBT(high energy beam transport) has been designed by using the TRACE-3D code and simulated by the 3D PIC(particle-in-cell) Track code.The total length of the HEBT is about 12 meters and a beam line of about 6 meters are shared with the exiting beam line of the HIRFL system.The simulation results show that the particles can be delivered efficiently in the HEBT and the particles at the exit of the HEBT well match the acceptance of the SSC for further acceleration.The dispersion is eliminated absolutely in the HEBT.The space-charge effect calculated by the Track code is inconspicuous.According to the simulation,more than 60 percent of the particles from the ion source can be transported into the acceptance of the SSC. 展开更多
