Radiological characterization of building materials used in Malaysia and assessment of external and internal doses 预览

In this study, the activity concentrations of ^226Ra,^232Th,^222Rn, and 40K, emanation fractions (P), equilibrium equivalent concentration (EEC), and mass exhalation rates (Em) of radon released from building materials used in Malaysia were studied using gamma-ray spectrometer with HPGe detector. Radiological parameters [activity concentration index (ACI), indoor air-absorbed dose rate (Din), annual effective dose (AEDin) from external and internal (ERn), soft tissues (HST) and lung (HL), and effective dose equivalent (Heff)] were estimated to evaluate radiological hazards due to the use of these building materials: sand, cement, gravel, bricks, tiles, fly ash, white cement, and ceramic raw materials. The measured P, EEC, and Em vary from 10 to 30%, 0.9 to 22 Bq m-3, and 33 to 674 mBq h^-1 kg^-1, respectively, while the calculated ACI and AEDin vary from 0.1 ± 0.01 to 2.1 ± 0.1 and 0.1 ± 0.01 to 2.4 ± 0.6 mSv y^-1, respectively. On the other hand, the internal annual effective dose ranges from 0.1 to 1.4 mSv y^-1. The estimated radiological risk parameters were below the recommended maximum values, and radiological hazards associated with building materials under investigation are therefore negligible. 展开更多

Considering the influencing factors of the layout of solar collectors such as the tilt angles,azimuth angles,spacing between collectors and the number of collector rows,a mathematical model of the collected energy of the solar collector with limited area on the horizontal plane is established.Two different optimized models including the cost benefit model and the minimum annual auxiliary heating energy model are conducted in this paper.The results show that,the collected energy in a year could increase with the increase of the number of collector rows.And the collected solar radiation in a year increases firstly and then decreases with the increase of the collector tilt angles.Furthermore,the collected solar radiation in a year increases firstly and then decreases with the continuous increase of the azimuth angles from -90° to 90°.Taking Nanjing city of China as an example,based on the optimized objective of maximum benefit,the optimal layout of the solar collector array in the area of 200 m2 should include:the number of collector rows is 8,the tilt angle is 40° and the azimuth angle is 0°.Meanwhile,the optimal methods for the optimized objective of minimum annual auxiliary heating energy should include:the number of collector rows is 9,the tilt angle is 50°,and the azimuth angle is 0°. 展开更多

The 600-mm precipitation isoline distinguishes tree-ring-width responses to climate in China

The numerous temperature and precipitation reconstructions in China based on tree-ring-width data have played significant roles in furthering the understanding of past climate changes. However, the geographical variability in the responses of trees to climate variations in China remains largely undetermined. Here, we describe an important spatial boundary in the response of trees to climate variations, namely the 600-mm annual precipitation isoline. We found that, to the north of this line, tree-ring widths are usually positively correlated with precipitation and negatively correlated with growing-season temperature. To the south of this line, the tree-ring widths respond positively to temperature, and winter half-year temperatures are the main reconstructed parameters, especially on the third topographical step of China. We also found that precipitation reconstructions based on tree-ring data and the Palmer Drought Severity Index almost exclusively fall in the region of the 200- to 600-mm annual precipitation isolines, not other regions. Our findings indicate that, when using multiple tree-ring-width chronologies for large-scale past climate reconstructions, the climatic signal of each tree-ring-width series should be carefully considered. 展开更多

At a field site with a calcareous soil on the Qinghai-Tibetan Plateau,the authors measured the year-round NO fluxes and related variables in a typically wintergrazed natural alpine meadow(NAM) and its adjacent forage oat field(FOF). The results showed that long-term plow tillage, fertilization and growing forage oats significantly yielded ca. 2.7 times more(p < 0.01) NO emissions from the FOF than the NAM(conservatively 208 vs. 56 g N/(ha·year) on average). The spring freeze–thaw period and non-growing season accounted for 17%-35% of the annual emissions, respectively. The Q10 of surface soil temperature(Ts) was 8.9 in the NAM(vs. 3.8 in the FOF), indicating increases of 24%–93% in NO emissions per 1–3 °C increase. However, the warming-induced increases could be smaller than those due to land use change and management practices. The Tsand concentrations of ammonium, nitrate and water-extractable organic carbon jointly explained 69% of the variance in daily NO fluxes from both fields during the annual period(p < 0.001). This result indicates that temporally and/or spatially distributed NO fluxes from landscapes with calcareous soils across native alpine meadows and/or fields cultivated with forage oats can be predicted by simultaneous observations of these four soil variables. 展开更多

Few studies have focused on the cost of acupuncture treatments although acupuncture has become popular in the United States(U.S.). The purpose of the current study was to examine the out-of-pocket costs incurred from acupuncture services based on an online website, Ok Copay.com. We examined descriptive statistics(range, median and 20% intervals) for the cost of acupuncture "first-time visits"and "follow-up visits" in 41 metropolitan regions in the U.S. The acupuncture prices of 723 clinics throughout 39 metropolitan regions were included, except for Birmingham, Alabama and Detroit, Michigan as there was no online data available at the time of the study for these two regions. The cost range for a first-time acupuncture visit was $15–400;the highest median was $150 in Charleston, South Carolina,while the lowest was $45 in St. Louis, Missouri. The top 10 cities for the highest median were:Baltimore, Washington, D.C., New York, San Francisco, San Jose, Boston, Atlanta, Seattle, Portland and Indianapolis, with the median $120, while the median for all 723 clinics was $112. For the follow-up visits,the cost range was $15–300;the highest median was $108 in Charleston, South Carolina, and the lowest$40 in Miami, Florida. The 10 cities with highest median follow-up acupuncture visit costs were: New York, Baltimore, New Orleans, Washington, D.C., Philadelphia, San Francisco, San Jose, Seattle, Boston and Atlanta, with the median $85, while for all 723 clinics the median price was $80. The estimation of the average gross annual income of each acupuncturist from the regions studied was $95,760, while the total annual cost of patients seeking acupuncture services in the U.S. was about $3.5 billion in 2018. 展开更多

Based on lightning monitoring data obtained by Heilongjiang lightning location network during 2015-2017, total characteristics, current intensity, annual change trend and density distribution characteristics of lightning in Heilongjiang Province in the three years were analyzed by using statistical analysis method. The results showed that total lightning showed an increasing trend in Heilongjiang in recent years, and average intensity of negative lightning was obviously larger than that of positive lightning, and intensity of ground lightning mainly concentrated in 10-50 kA. Thunder and lightning activity of Heilongjiang was mainly in summer and concentrated during June-September. Daily variation of lightning frequency in Heilongjiang showed obvious single-peak-single-valley type, and change trends of positive lightning, negative lightning and total lightning were basically consistent. Frequent occurrence period of lightning mainly concentrated in 13:00-19:00, accounting for 50.6% of total frequency of lightning, and it was key period of lightning defense in Heilongjiang Province. Regional distribution of lightning density had obvious difference, and lightning mainly concentrated in the Greater Khingan Mountains of north Heilongjiang and Harbin, Yichun and Suihua of central Heilongjiang. 展开更多

Background:While the general migration routes of most waders are known,details concerning connectivity between breeding grounds, stopover sites and wintering grounds are often lacking.Such information is critical from the conservation perspective and necessary for understanding the annual cycle.Studies are especially needed to identify key stopover sites in remote regions. Using satellite transmitters, we traced spring and autumn migration routes and connectivity of Grey Plovers on the East Atlantic Flyway.Our findings also revealed the timing,flight speed, and duration of migrations. Methods:We used ARGOS satellite transmitters to track migration routes of 11 Grey Plovers that were captured at the German Wadden Sea where they had stopped during migration.Birds were monitored for up to 3 years,2011-2014.Results:Monitoring signals indicated breeding grounds in the Taimyr and Yamal regions;important staging sites on the coasts of the southern Pechora Sea and the Kara Sea;and wintering areas that ranged from NW-Ireland to Guinea Bissau.The average distance traveled from wintering grounds to breeding grounds was 5534 km. Migration duration varied between 42 and 152 days;during this period birds spent about 95% of the time at staging sites.In spring most plovers crossed inland Eastern Europe, whereas in autumn most followed the coastline.Almost all of the birds departed during favorable wind conditions within just 4 days (27-30 May) on northward migration from the Wadden Sea.In spring birds migrated significantly faster between the Wadden Sea and the Arctic than on return migration in autumn (12 vs.37 days),with shorter stopovers during the northward passage.Conclusions:Our study shows that satellite tags can shed considerable light on migration strategies by revealing the use of different regions during the annual cycle and by providing detailed quantitative data on population connectivity and migration timing. 展开更多

In the early design stages,architects are in constant search of a design direction that can determine the success or failure of the final design.However,in real design practice,most of the prediction methods for building performances,in this paper energy and thermal comfort,are utilised in the later design stages.Spatial configuration is one of the most important issues for architectural design in the early design stage.This study investigates the correlations between the spatial indicators connected with architectural design and the building physics indicators ventilation performance and energy performance.The main objective is to explore the potential of applying spatial indicators using space syntax to predict ventilation performance and energy performance in order to support architects for the evaluation of their concepts and schemes in early design stages.The layout of a high-rise apartment in China in five different cities is chosen as a case study.The results show that the selected three indicators:connectivity value,air change rate and annual cooling saving ratio are linearly correlated,not just at building level but also at room level.R2,the correlation coefficient of determination,is between 0.53 and 0.90(except for the case of Chongqing at building level). 展开更多

目的:研究在不同海拔条件下播种时期对直播一年生当归药材形态与物质积累的影响,以期为直播一年生当归栽培技术提供理论和技术依据。方法:以去翅当归种子为试验材料,分别在低海拔非当归种植区和当归传统种植区地块设置4月3日、4月13日、... 目的:研究在不同海拔条件下播种时期对直播一年生当归药材形态与物质积累的影响,以期为直播一年生当归栽培技术提供理论和技术依据。方法:以去翅当归种子为试验材料,分别在低海拔非当归种植区和当归传统种植区地块设置4月3日、4月13日、4月23日、5月3日4个播期处理,观察生育期生长动态,秋季采挖后测定药材形态指标和物质积累量。结果:随着播种时间的推迟,当归药材根长、芦头茎粗和分支数均呈降低的趋势,植株地上部和药材地下部物质积累量也随着播期推迟逐渐下降,且在同一播期条件下低海拔处理均高于高海拔处理。结论:直播一年生当归种植应在春季土壤解冻后尽早进行。 展开更多
