He worked in the Mitsui Plant Biotechnology Research Institute, Japan, from 1991 to1996, and has been a professor at SCAU since 1997. Cold-adapted bioinoculants are considered as harbingers of sustainable hill agriculture. Therefore, two previously characterized psychrotolerant diazotrophs, Pseudomonas jesenii MP1 and Rhodococcus qingshengii S10107, were evaluated for their plant growthpromoting potential for chickpea (Cicer arietinum L.) grown under natural field conditions. Comparative analysis of agronomical and biochemical crop parameters revealed the irrelevance of chemical fertilizers for chickpea production;the diazotrophs alone were sufficient to fulfil the crop's nutritional requirement. However, the integrated use of bacterial strains in combination with urea at 20 kg N ha^-1 as urea was being recommended for higher crop yield and better soil nitrogen status. Quantitative polymerase chain reaction (qPCR) and denaturing gradient gel electrophoresis (DGGE)-based soil bacterial dynamics unveiled the persistence of both diazotrophs until the end of the crop maturation period without affecting the native micro-flora. Therefore, these bioinoculants can be explored as natural nitrogen resource, and an additional incentive in their bio-formulation will be a step towards agricultural sustainability. 展开更多

The mechanism of farmland marginalization in Chinese mountainous areas:Evidence from cost and return changes

Farmland marginalization has become the main trend of Iand-use change in the mountainous areas of China.Using annual survey data of major agricultural production costs and earnings at national and provincial levels in China,this study aims to analyze the reasons and mechanism behind farmland marginalization in mountainous areas.We find that farmers on plains are able to reduce their per mu labor input effectively through in tensive use of agricultural machinery,which has minimized the impact of the increase in labor price.However,it is extremely challenging for farmers in mountainous areas to use the same method owing to the rough terrain.Thus,per laborer farming area in these areas has increased relatively slowly,causing a widening gap in agricultural labor productivity between the two regions.With the rapid rise in labor costs since 2003,the marginalization of cultivated land in mountainous areas is evident.In 2013,the net profit of agricultural production in mountainous China fell below zero.Since 2000,the Iand-use and land?cover change in these areas was characterized by the reduction of farmland area,reforestation,and the enhancement of the NDVI value.The high correlation between the NDVI change rate and the ratio of change in farmland(r=-0.70)and forest(r=0.91)in mountainous areas at provincial level further attests to the trend of farmla nd margi nalization there.Fin ally,we summarize the mecha nism of such marginalization against the backdrop of the rapid increase in the opport unity cost of farming and the rapid fall of agricultural labor forces in mountainous areas.This study contributes to a deep understanding of the development process of farmland marginalization and abandonment as well as forest transition in Chinese mountainous areas. 展开更多

Discussions regarding the functional transformation of agricultural utilization and the mechanisms that underlie these changes within the Three Gorges Reservoir Area(TGRA)reflect variati ons in the relati on ship betwee n people and their environme nt in China's central and wester ns part,an area of mountains and reservoirs.A clear understa nding of these changes also provides the scientific basis for the development of multi-functional agriculture in typical mountainous areas.Five counties were selected for analysis in this study from the hinterland of the TGRA;we analyzed changes in farmland scaling and corresponding under?lying mechanisms by defining the concepts of“Scaling Farmland”(SF)and by using the software packages ArcGIS10.2,SPSS,and Geographical Detectors.The results of this analysis show that sources of increased SF have mainly comprised cultivated and shrub land.In deed,with the excepti on of some alpine off-season vegetables,SF growth has mainly occurred in low altitude areas and in places where the slope is less than 30°.We also show that spatial changes in various SF types have also been substantially different,but in all cases are closely related to road and township administrative centers.Natural factors at the patch level,including elevation and slope,have contributed significantly to SF,while at the township level,underlying socioeconomic and humanistic factors have tended to include road traffic and agricultural population density.In contrast,at the region al level,underlying driving forces within each have tended to be more significant than overall study area scale.We show that while changes in,and the development of,SF have been driven by numerous factors,agri?cultural policies have always been amongst the most important.The results clearly elucidate general land use transformation patter ns within the mountain regi ons of western China. 展开更多

As nitrate pollution in groundwater has become increasingly serious in recent years, nitrogen isotope was adopted in this paper to define its sources in a typical agricultural area of Dong5e hydrogeological unit. The results show that: Higher content of NO3^- detected in shallow groundwater is 27.77 mg/L on average and δ^15N content ranges from 7.8‰ to 12 ‰, indicating that shallow groundwater is mainly contaminated by sewage or feces. In contrast, less NO3^- in deep groundwater (karst water) has an average value of 12.81 mg/L and δ^15N content is between 7.2‰ and 14.3‰, which is closely related to human disturbance as mentioned above. In addition, considering relatively low groundwater quality at some monitoring sites, reasonable fertilization is a better choice in the study area to reduce nitrate source in groundwater. 展开更多

Teachers are the obligatory ingredients in enhancing the effective learning process at university through their keen potential for quality of teaching, research, and management. The faculty of agricultural universities in Pakistan is striving for productive agriculture education and research. Teachers possessing prevailing sense of self-efficacy are intrinsically motivated and additionally challenge themselves by multifarious tasks. The study was conducted to observe the self-efficacy levels of agricultural universities teachers at Faisalabad and Rawalpindi with respect to three particular domains named as teaching, research, and management. Stratified random sampling technique was used. From target population four strata, i.e., professors, associate professors, assistant professors, and lecturers were considered. As a result, 100 (59%) teachers from University of Agriculture Faisalabad and 67 (40.1%) teachers from PirMehr Ali Shah Arid Agriculture University Rawalpindi participated in the study as respondents. Data were collected through a questionnaire as an instrument of research. Pilot study was done on a sample of 24 teachers. Data were analyzed by using t-test and ANOVA test. High level of efficacy in terms of teaching, research, and management was found;teachers were fully confident in their beliefs to accomplish intended tasks. Teachers having less administrative tasks reported better performance in related tasks. 展开更多

Agriculture practices have been widely proposed as the major cause of amphibian population decline.However,the majority of these results have been based on laboratory experiments.The present study was conducted to test the repercussion of wetland sediment provenance on amphibian larval development.Bufo bufo larvae were used in two different treatments in an outdoor experiment,the first one using sediment from one wetland surrounded by intensive agricultural practices,and the second using sediment with no record of agrochemical uses.A negative effect was observed in the agricultural treatment,from subcellular to individual level.The results showed that the sediment from agricultural practices watershed generates a reduction in survival.Furthermore,individuals that developed under this treatment showed a lower total length and a delay in the time necessary to complete metamorphosis;these features are connected with recruitment success.In the same way,biochemical analysis showed high values of lipid peroxidation in metamorphs developing in sediments from an agricultural area.Finally,the results obtained highlight the importance of considering the sediments,not only the water,as origin treatment,allowing us to understand the consequences on amphibian populations that inhabit areas affected by intensive agriculture. 展开更多

The export status to Japan is directly related to the overall trend of China’s agricultural exports. Based on the HS9-coded agricultural product trade data of the Japanese Ministry of Finance in 2001-2017,using the ternary marginal analysis method,the driving force of China’s agricultural exports to Japan was analyzed in this paper from a static and dynamic perspective. The results showed that 98. 89% of the driving force of China’s agricultural exports to Japan was from the contribution of quantity margin. The contribution of the extensive margin had been decreasing year by year after 2006,and it has been negative for many years. The reason was that technical barriers such as the Positive List System lead to less export of agricultural product in varieties and types. The average marginal contribution rate of price was 8. 26%. The average price of exported agricultural products has been basically higher than the world average level since 2013,suggesting that the quality of exported agricultural products has been improved. While maintaining the quantity of agricultural exports,improving the quality of agricultural products,expanding export varieties and increasing export value added are the sources of sustainable growth of China’s agricultural exports in the future. 展开更多

Even today,academics continue to debate the effect of feminization of agricultural labor force on agricultural output.By considering the dimensions of participation in decision-making and production,this study divides the various agricultural production models into three types:(i)the traditional model of decisions made either jointly by men and women or by men alone while both genders participate in production,(ii)complete feminization of agricultural decision-making and the production labor force,and(iii)feminization of the agricultural production labor force only.This study investigates the effects of combining or separating decision-making and production in regard to agricultural development in the context of feminization of the agricultural labor force.Using follow-up data collected from 2004–2008 by the Ministry of Agriculture of China,we built a comprehensive panel data model to test our hypotheses.Our research shows that in comparison to traditional agricultural households and fully feminized agricultural labor forces,partially feminized production resulted in lower grain yield and technological advancement.The feminization of agricultural labor does not necessarily have a negative impact on agricultural output,especially since heavy manual labor is being increasingly replaced by agricultural machinery and outsourcing of tasks.The degree of feminization of the decision-making and production processes should be an important consideration when evaluating the purported negative effects of the feminization of agricultural labor. 展开更多

The Impact of Farmland Transfers on Agricultural Investment in China:A Perspective of Transaction Cost Economics

There is growing concern that farmland transfers lead to less agricultural investment, which may adversely affect agricultural productivity growth in China.Prior research has primarily focused on the differences between owned cultivated land and rented plots,but little is known about how farmland transfers between relatives,which are popular in rural China,specifically affect agricultural investment.In this paper,we present a conceptual framework of transaction cost economics to compare different contracting strategies in China's farmland rental markets.As farmland rental markets in China are immature,land transfer between relatives establishes bilateral governance,which has the advantage of addressing the opportunistic activities of both parties and can ultimately increase investment by tenants.Based on data from two waves of household surveys,we empirically examine the impact of bilateral governance on the application of organic fertilizer,an indicator for agricultural investment.Our findings show that apart from economic factors, kinship is important to the functioning of farmland rental markets in rural areas. 展开更多
