Understanding the mechanisms underlying cell-surface interaction is of fundamental importance for the rational design of scaffolds aiming at tissue engineering,tissue repair and neural regeneration applications.Here,we examined patterns of neuroblastoma cells cultured in three-dimensional polymeric scaffolds obtained by two-photon lithography.Because of the intrinsic resolution of the technique,the micrometric cylinders composing the scaffold have a lateral step size of~200 nm,a surface roughness of around 20 nm,and large values of fractal dimension approaching 2.7.We found that cells in the scaffold assemble into separate groups with many elements per group.After cell wiring,we found that resulting networks exhibit high clustering,small path lengths,and small-world characteristics.These values of the topological characteristics of the network can potentially enhance the quality,quantity and density of information transported in the network compared to equivalent random graphs of the same size.This is one of the first direct observations of cells developing into 3D small-world networks in an artificial matrix. 展开更多

The central nervous system is known to have limited regenerative capacity.Not only does this halt the human body’s reparative processes after central nervous system lesions,but it also impedes the establishment of effective and safe therapeutic options for such patients.Despite the high prevalence of stroke and spinal cord injury in the general population,these conditions remain incurable and place a heavy burden on patients’families and on society more broadly.Neuroregeneration and neural engineering are diverse biomedical fields that attempt reparative treatments,utilizing stem cells-based strategies,biologically active molecules,nanotechnology,exosomes and highly tunable biodegradable systems(e.g.,certain hydrogels).Although there are studies demonstrating promising preclinical results,safe clinical translation has not yet been accomplished.A key gap in clinical translation is the absence of an ideal animal or ex vivo model that can perfectly simulate the human microenvironment,and also correspond to all the complex pathophysiological and neuroanatomical factors that affect functional outcomes in humans after central nervous system injury.Such an ideal model does not currently exist,but it seems that the nonhuman primate model is uniquely qualified for this role,given its close resemblance to humans.This review considers some regenerative therapies for central nervous system repair that hold promise for future clinical translation.In addition,it attempts to uncover some of the main reasons why clinical translation might fail without the implementation of nonhuman primate models in the research pipeline. 展开更多

Shape grammars as a reverse engineering method for the morphogenesis of architectural facade design

The field of shape grammars spans 47 years,but its potential in the practice and education of art,architecture,and engineering remains far from being utilized.Similarly,while reverse engineering in some engineering disciplines is well-established,its implementation in architectural design remains under-represented.By combining the two domains,this paper develops a novel method that merges the power of shape grammars as a parsing tool in reverse engineering to decode the morphogenesis of visual compositions in architectural design.The merged power is demonstrated by decoding the formal language of a faqade design of a case study,in which seemingly few simple rules can derive surprisingly complex compositions.The rules of the language can then be used to reconstruct parts of the case facade.Most shape grammars in the architectural literature are applied on formal historical precedents,but the subject of morphological analysis in this paper is contemporary and has a style that exhibits non-orthogonal configurations,which initially appear far from being standardized or subjected to regulatory tectonic rules.The faqade derivation grammar is explained and resynthesized in various computations to explore emergent articulations that display its predictive,synthetic,and generative powers in addition to typical analytic ones. 展开更多

Based on the geological characteristics of continental reservoirs, five theories and key technologies have been developed:(1) Enriched the understandings about the mass transfer characteristics of components between CO2 and crude oil in continental reservoirs, micro-flooding mechanism and sequestration mechanism of different geological bodies.(2) Established the design method of reservoir engineering parameters, injection-production control technology and development effect evaluation technology of CO2 flooding, etc.(3) Developed a series of production engineering technologies such as separated layer CO2 injection technology, high efficiency lifting technology, on-line wellbore corrosion monitoring and protection technology.(4) Innovated a series of surface engineering technology including CO2 capture technology, pipeline CO2 transportation, CO2 surface injection, and production gas circulation injection, etc.(5) Formed a series of supporting technologies including monitoring, and safety and environmental protection evaluation of CO2 flooding reservoir. On this basis, the technological development directions in the future have been put forward:(1) Breakthrough in low-cost CO2 capture technology to provide cheap CO2 gas source;(2) Improve the miscibility technology between CO2 and crude oil to enhance oil displacement efficiency;(3) Improve CO2 sweeping volume;(4) Develop more effective lifting tools and technologies;(5) Strengthen the research of basic theory and key technology of CO2 storage monitoring. A novel method was proposed to design the structure of a bone tissue engineering scafold based on triply periodic minimal surface.In this method,reverse engineering software was used to reconstruct the surface from point cloud data.This method overcomes the limitations of commercially available software packages that prevent them from generating models with complex surfaces used for bone tissue engineering scafolds.Additionally,the fluid feld of the scafolds was simulated through a numerical method based on fnite volume and the cell proliferation performance was evaluated via an in vitro experiment.The cell proliferation and the mass flow evaluated in a bioreactor further verifed the flow feld simulated using computational fluid dynamics.The result of this study illustrates that the pressure value drops rapidly from 0.103 Pa to 0.011 Pa in the y-axis direction and the mass flow is unevenly distributed in the outlets.The mass flow in the side outlets is observed to be approximately 24.3 times higher thanthe bottom.Importantly,although the mean value of wall shear stress is signifcantly more than 0.05 Pa,there is stil a large area with a suitable shear stress below 0.05 Pa where most cells can proliferate well.The result shows that th inlet velocity 0.0075 m/s is suitable for cell proliferation in the scafold.This study provides an insight into the design analysis,and in vitro experiment of a bone tissue engineering scafold. 展开更多

Since the discovery of graphene in 2004, two-dimensional (2D) materials have attracted worldwide interest. They are proved to be the most promising materials for next generation electronic and optoelectronic devices, including transistor, photodetector, sensor, modulator and light-emitting diode. Defects, e.g. vacancies, adatoms, edges, grain boundaries, and substitutional impurities, are inevitable in 2D materials[1]. They will influence the performance of the materials in many aspects such as mechanical, electrical, optical and optoelectronic properties. For example, the presence of sulfur vacancies (SVs) leads to electron donor states within the electronic bandgap. This increases electron concentration and results in n-type characteristic in as-prepared MoS2. They could also give rise to hopping transport behavior in low carrier density and act as scattering centers to reduce the carrier mobility in MoS2. Thus, defect engineering, namely, eliminating the unfavorable defects and introducing beneficial defects is very meaningful, and would be a promising strategy to realize high performance electronic and optoelectronic devices based on 2D materials. 展开更多

It has been demonstrated that the zigzag honeycomb nanoribbons exhibit an intriguing edge magnetism. Here the effect of the anisotropy on the edge magnetism in zigzag honeycomb nanoribbons is investigated using two kinds of large-scale quantum Monte Carlo simulations. The anisotropy in zigzag honeycomb nanoribbons is characterized by the ratios of nearest-neighbor hopping integrals t1 in one direction and t2 in another direction. Considering the electron-electron correlation, it is shown that the edge ferromagnetism could be enhanced greatly as t2/|t1|increases from 1 to 3, which not only presents an avenue for the control of this magnetism but is also useful for exploring further novel magnetism in new nano-scale materials. 展开更多

Numerical simulation and land subsidence control for deep foundation pit dewatering of Longyang Road Station on Shanghai Metro Line 18 预览

In terms of controlling groundwater in deep foundation pit projects, the usual methods include increasing the curtain depth, reducing the amount of pumped groundwater, and implementing integrated control, in order to reduce the drawdown and land subsidence outside pits. In dewatering design for confined water, factors including drawdown requirements, the thickness of aquifers, the depth of dewatering wells and the depth of cutoff curtains have to be considered comprehensively and numerical simulations are generally conducted for calculation and analysis. Longyang Road Station on Shanghai Metro Line 18 is taken as the case study subject in this paper, a groundwater seepage model is developed according to the on-site engineering geological conditions and hydrogeological conditions, the excavation depth of the foundation pit as well as the design depth of the enclosure, hydrogeological parameters are determined via the pumping test, and the foundation pit dewatering is simulated by means of the three-dimensional finite difference method, which produces numerical results that consistent with real monitoring data as to the groundwater table. Besides, the drawdown and the land subsidence both inside and outside the pit caused by foundation pit dewatering are calculated and analyzed for various curtain depths. This study reveals that the drawdown and the land subsidence change faster near the curtain with the increase in the curtain depth, and the gradient of drawdown and land subsidence changes dwindles beyond certain depths. In this project, the curtain depth of 47/49 m is adopted, and a drawdown-land subsidence verification test is completed given hanging curtains before the excavation. The result turns out that the real measurements basically match the calculation results from the numerical simulation, and by increasing the depth of curtains, the land subsidence resulting from dewatering is effectively controlled. 展开更多

Wide-bandgap perovskites are recently drawing tremendous attention in the community for high-efficiency all-perovskite tandem solar cells.However,the formamidinium (FA^+) and methylammonium (MA^+) based wide-bandgap mixed halide perovskites suffered from high density of traps and pin-holes,respectively.Fundamental understanding on the crystallization and film formation processes are keys to overcome those challenges but not yet clearly understood.In this study,an in-situ photoluminescence technique was used to investigate the perovskite crystallization during the thermal annealing process.It is found that the crystallization of a mixed halide perovskite with bromide (Br^-) and iodine (I^-) ions following the Ostward ripening crystal growth.Interestingly,it is found that the initial nucleation reaction is quickly completed in the first few seconds,however,leaving the small crystals with inhomogeneous composition.The different aggregation affinities of such inhomogeneous small crystals provoke the formation of pin-holes during the thermal annealing process.By engineering the precursor solution to control the nucleation rate,the chemical composition of the small crystals has become homogenous.Uniform pin-hole free high Br-composited wide-bandgap MA0.9Cs0.1Pb(I0.6Br0.4)3 perovskite films with bandgap energy of 1.8 eV have been realized.The corresponding photovoltaic devices have achieved an encouraging device efficiency of 15.1% with superb photostability. 展开更多
