Geochemical Assessments and Potential Energy Sources Evaluations Based on Oil Shale and Geothermal Resource in Wadi Al-Shallala—North Jordan 预览

Despite that, the needs of renewable energy resources become a must in Jordan. Wadi Al-Shallala oil shale is investigated in this work for geochemical, petrographic features and hydrocarbon potential as a conventional energy resource. Various petrographic and geochemical techniques were applied. Oil shale resource potential is evaluated for cooling and heating Sal village houses. Geothermal heat pumps, as renewable energy resource in the study area, were simulated for comparison purposes. Results show that Calcite is the main mineral component of oil shale. Magnesite, Ferrisilicate and Zaherite are exhibited in the studied samples. Other trace elements of Zinc, Cobalt and Molybdenum were presented, too. Calcium oxide of 41.01% and Silicon oxide of 12.4% are the main oxides reflected in this oil shale. Petrographic features of the analyzed oil shale found that the primary mineral constituent is micritic calcite, while the secondary minerals include carbonate mud and opaque minerals. Furthermore, it’s found that total organic carbon averages 3.33% while the total carbon content averages 20.6%. ModerateTOCvalues suggest that Wadi Al-Shallala oil shale has a good source rock potential. Even though nitrogen and sulfur are of low contents in Wadi Al-Shallala oil shale, direct combustion of the reserve for electricity generating will increase CO2 emissions by 2.71 Million m3. Two systems were simulated to cover Sal village cooling and heating demands. The conventional system is compared with geothermal heat pumps. Geothermal heat pumps are found to save 60% of electricity consumption in heating and 50% in cooling systems. The environmental benefits for geothermal system implementation will be a reduction in energy consumption as electricity. The savings in fuel oil will be about 9.35 Million barrels. While the reduction of CO2 emissions will drop to 1.5 Million m3. Results suggest that geothermal heat pumps are the best for satisfying cooling 展开更多

This research was conducted to investigate the mineralogy, petrography, geochemistry and petrogensis of the basaltic flows in Jurf Ed Darawish (JDB) area of central Jordan. Sexton representative basalt rock samples were selected from the studied JDB outcrops. Modally, JDB consists of plagioclase, olivine, pyroxene (diopside), opaque’s, calcite and iddingsite minerals. Petrographically, basalt is holocrystalline, hypidiomorphic fine to medium grained and exhibited aphanitic to porphyritic texture. The common textures of the JDB rock samples were aphanitic, porphyritic, trachytic, glomeroporphyritic, sub ophitic, vesicular, and amygdaloidal. Geochemically, all of the inspected samples of JDB are located within Trachy basalt and plate alkaline basalt. The tectonic setting of JDB was plotted within the calcalkaline basalt and continental basaltic field. The rare-earth elements showed enrichment of the Ba and K, depletion of Ce relative to K, and enrichment of Nb and Pb with depletion of Y and positive Nb, Zr and Ti anomalies. Negative anomalies of Ba, Sr, Ti and P may be attributed to the fractionation of feldspar for Ba and Sr depletion apatite for P depletion. The positive Nb peak conforms to the tertiary as well as to recent continental alkali basalt provinces and acts as an indicator to the JDB product for the lithosphere from upwelling of the asthenosphere mantle. 展开更多

In light of the highly demanding cement market in Jordan, comprehensive studies should be undertaken to investigate the properties of the different cement types. This paper studies the Dynamic modulus of elasticity (DME) at 2, 7 and 28 days in mortars using six cement Jordanian types with CaO contents less than that of the ordinary Portland cements. It was found that the DME has strong relation with compressive strength. At the age of 28 days the mortars had some different values of DME. One important result of our work is that DME at the age of 28 days can be derived from those of the two days mixes. To account for the differences in dynamic modulus of elasticity with time, it is highly recommended to study in detail the mortars petrography under the light microscope. Using the scanning electron microscope (SEM), usually with attachment for chemical analysis at the crystal scale, in addition to X-ray diffraction technique may help characterization of the cement phases qualitatively and quantitatively. 展开更多

Geothermal Energy Utilization in Jordanian Deserts 预览

Jordanian deserts compose more than 70% of the country area. Furthermore, it’s the second vital area in fauna and flora variation after Jordan valley. Geothermal gradient in this area shows high promising future potential. New renewable energy systems installation in Jordan will have a positive environmental and economic contribution to the national bill. Currently, limited geothermal utilizations were evaluated in the Jordanian deserts. Thermal waters in the deserts were used for irrigation only. Six different applications for direct and indirect geothermal applications in Jordanian deserts were suggested and evaluated. Ground source heat pumps for heating and cooling purposes and crops drying were expected to be the most appropriate applications of geothermal energy in the deserts. Geothermal utilizations were investigated regarding their probable impact on local and national economic scale. Therefore, an integrated plan for geothermal applications in Jordan is becoming very essential in the future. It has been found that geothermal energy in Jordanian deserts could be utilized for different applications. Despite of the potential political, technical and financial barriers, exploiting new geothermal utilization in the deserts will contribute to solving socio-economic and environmental problems challenging poor deserts areas. 展开更多

Petrography, Geochemistry and Petrogensis of Pleistocene Basaltic Flow from Northwest Atarous Area, Central Jordan 预览

The AB flow was introduced in the Miocene ... Fifteen basaltic rock samples were collected from central Jordan at the Atarous volcanism basaltic flow area. The samples cover about 8 km2 from the Atarous Basalt flow (AB). The AB flow was introduced in the Miocene to Pleistocene periods. The samples analyze major and trace elements by using XRF. Petrography, Geochemistry and Petrogensis have investigation to carried out for the AB. The petrography analyses of the AB rocks show they are composed of plagioclase (labradorite and bytownite), pyroxene (augite), and olivine (forsterite);accessory minerals include apatite and secondary minerals magnetite, ilmenite, spinel and iddingsite. The AB is classified within alkaline to sub-alkaline and tholeiitic to Calc-Alkaline basalt. The Mg# range between 0.39 and 0.49 of basalt samples exhibits different degrees of fractionation with a low degree of melting < 15% as indicated from the varying concentration of incompatible trace elements Ba, Rb, Sr. Trace elements of primary magna show low variable abundances of compatible and incompatible elements, which reflecs a homogenous source. Geochemical parameters such as Mg# and high Ti contents indicate that the corresponding magmas are of primary origin. The tectonic setting of AB is explained by using discrimination diagrams, Ti-Zr-Sr and Nb-Zr-Y and Ti-Zr-Y, the AB plotted within the plate basalt, alkali basalt and Calk alkaline basalt field, respectively. The spider diagram shows the samples AB enrichment of the Ba, K, Nb and Ce, depletion of Nb and Y. The AB exhibited positive Nb, Ce and Ti anomalies, and negative anomalies of Ba, Sr, and P. It is attributed to the fractionation of feldspar for Ba and Sr and apatite for P depletion. The spider diagram showed a positive Nb peak, which conforms to the tertiary and to recent continental alkali basalt provinces and indicates that the AB is the product of lithosphere from upwelling asthenosphere mantle. 展开更多

Representative thin sections were optically analyzed for their mineral constituents and micro fractures. Findings of this study will contribute to a comprehensive understanding of the correlation between selected petrological characteristics of basalts and their heat conduction properties. It found that a 10% increase of opaque and ferromagnesian minerals volume in the studied basalts leads to a thermal conductivity increasing by 0.4 W&bull;m&minus;1&bull;K&minus;1. This may considerably contribute to provide an alternative to direct measurements of the thermal conductivity in Jordan basalts if a sufficient mineralogical data set is achievable. Thus, the prediction of thermal conductivity through modal mineral composition may become a significant feature for efficient geothermal system exploration in basaltic rocks. The results can be brought together into a petrophysical and hydrogeothermal model for better reservoir characterization. Such models will improve the assessment of the basalt’s suitability as a geothermal reservoir for cooling and heating utilizations. 展开更多

A Structural Equation Model (SEM) is developed for the implementation of CE, then the model is applied to the following Jordanian industrial sectors: chemical and cosmetics industries, engineering and electrical industries and information technology, wood and furniture industries, and construction industry. The implementation level for the six CE practices among the selected sectors is investigated;a statistical comparative analysis between the considered industrial sectors is conducted. Thereafter, a system dynamics model is developed to understand the true CE trade-offs, which is used as a validity measure to insure that the proposed statistical model and hypotheses are valid. 展开更多

Geothermal energy installation in Jordan will have a positive impact on the economy, it will reduce the national energy bill. Shallow geothermal systems are likely to be promising for future utilization in the country. Therefore, further evaluations of geothermal energy resources are highly recommended. Distributed efforts have been done to evaluate the potential of geothermal resources utilization in Jordan. A comprehensive geothermal resources assessment has not yet been conducted in the country. The present work evaluates the potential of four geothermal fields in Jordan. Geothermal gradient map shows that Jordan has two high geothermal gradient fields with higher than 4.5&deg;C/100m and other two moderate geothermal gradient fields with a range of 3.5 - 4.5&deg;C/100m. It has been found that the water temperature in some fields reaches about 68.5&deg;C. Five possible heat source hypotheses were discussed. Geothermal potential in Jordan is expected to evolve as a result of NS trending Dead Sea Rift activities. With the presence of faults parallel with geothermal gradient anomalies in each evaluated field, this hypothesis becomes the most effective to explain the heat source. It is of utmost importance to consider the geothermal energy potential for future utilization in Jordan. An integrated geothermal potential map will be very helpful for energy policies and future strategies planning in the country. 展开更多

Thermo-Physical and Mechanical Properties of Al Hashimiyya Basaltic Rocks, Jordan 预览

North eastern basaltic desert is expected to host, with other rock formations, a shallow geothermal field. For efficient geothermal potential evaluation, a complete understanding of thermo-physical properties of deep reservoir rocks is of utmost importance. Due to the complex technical thermo-physical evaluations of basalts in depth, surficial basalts extending to the west were evaluated. Accordingly, six basaltic sub-flows from Al Hashimiyya were examined into their thermo-physical and mechanical properties. The flows represent the western extinction of large olivine basalt eruption. Different properties were evaluated for oven dried samples: thermal conductivity, permeability, porosity, density and specific heat capacity. In addition, basalts mechanical properties were examined: compressional wave velocity, unconfined compressive strength, indirect tensile strength and point load tests. The results were correlated in proportional patterns. They indicated that thermal conductivity of the studied basalts is dependent on porosity and permeability in parallel with mineral composition. It’s found that mechanical properties are controlled by porosity and permeability, too. The studied basalt properties exhibit slight deviation from the continental basalts thermo-physical and mechanical properties reported in the region. Thermal conductivity ranges between 1.89 and 1.32 W·m-1·K-1, whereas the porosity and permeability averages at 10.64% and 9.75899E-15 m2, respectively. Additionally, unconfined compressive strength averages at 104.9 Mpa and it’s almost 20 times higher than indirect tensile strength which ranges from 8.73 to 2.21 Mpa. As the samples were tested under laboratory conditions, in situ conditions will not be reflected by such values. At greater depth, temperature, pressure and hydrothermal activities will certainly affect rock properties. Micro fractures, whether it will be filled or not, will affect basalts properties, too. Under certain conditions the corresponding Lie (resp., Jordan) algebras are simple. Two families of skew root systems of Lie type (resp., of Jordan type) are constructed and the corresponding Lie (resp., Jordan) algebras are identified. For a 4 × 4 × 4 tensor gj with multilinear rank (4,4,3), we show that gj must be turned into the canonical form if the upper triangular entries of the last three slices of gj are nonzero. Background: Nursing students are at risk for committing medication administration errors (MAEs), which significantly alter the delivery of safe and effective healthcare. Purpose: To identify the medications most frequently involved in medication errors as reported by Jordanian nursing students, as well as to identify the level of nursing students’ adherence to best-practice when administering high-risk medications. Methods: A cross-sectional design was used among a convenience sample of 74 nurses. Results: A total of 74 of 110 (67.3%) questionnaires were returned. The most frequent medications subjected to MAEs were Dopamine, Dobutamine, and Insulin continuous intravenous infusion (17.2%, 16.0% and 13.5% respectively). Regarding the adherence to best-practice, nursing students adhered the most to the following best-practices: checking the patient armband prior to medication administration with a mean of 3.81 (±0.6) and bringing the MAR sheet with them when preparing a medication with a mean of 3.46 (±1.1). Conclusion: Developing an effective medication training programs in all undergraduate nursing programs in Jordanis is vital to ensure patient safety. Nursing educators in clinical and academic settings need to reinforce the importance of adherence to medication management best-practice in all courses. Prioritization of Promising Wadi Wala Watershed (Southern Jordan) Using GIS-Based Morphometric Analysis and Multivariate Statistics 预览

GIS-based morphometric analysis was employed for prioritization of the Wadi Wala catchment, southern Jordan. Twenty three fourth-order sub-basins were prioritized based on morphometric analysis, then appropriate soil and water conservation measures were proposed. Digital Elevation Model (DEM) and Arc GIS were used to delineate watersheds and to extract the drainage networks, and other required thematic maps (elevation and slope). LANDSAT data was used to prepare land use/land cover map, and a soil map was digitized using Arc GIS software. Linear and shape parameters were computed to prioritize 23 sub-watersheds, and ranks were designated based on the calculated compound parameter (Cp). Sub-basins grouped under a high priority class are exposed to high erosion risk;thus, they are of high potential for applying soil and water conservation measures. The current study substantiates the capability of morphometric analysis method, and geospatial technology in watershed prioritization. The Discriminant Analysis (DA) employed validates the priority classes (high, moderate, and low priority) achieved based on morphometric analysis, where they found statistically distinct from each other. Thus, it can be concluded that prioritization based only on morphometric analysis method is consistent, reliable, and of high capacity using GIS platform. Priority map along with soil, land user/cover, and slope information will help decision makers to execute proper soil and water conservation programs in the rainfed highlands of Jordan. 展开更多

Purpose: The purpose of the study was to estimate the prevalence of overweight and obesity and assess knowledge on the health risks associated with obesity among female adolescents in the Jordanian capital Amman. Method: A cross-sectional survey of 782 female adolescents was conducted using random sampling technique. Height and weight were measured and body mass index for age was used to determine overweight and obesity depending on International Obesity Task Force standers. Obesity risk knowledge-10 scale was used to assess knowledge level among female adolescents. Results: The prevalence of overweight and obesity among female adolescents were 34.9% and 12.5% respectively. Knowledge about health risk associated with obesity among female adolescents was low. Ninety five percent of participant had low to moderate knowledge about health risk associated with obesity. Conclusions: Prevalence of overweight and obesity among Jordanian female adolescents was high. Overweight and obesity is a serious public health problem among female adolescents in Jordan. 展开更多

Psychosomatic symptoms are present in various stages of life. University students have also manifested such symptoms, which were also found to be linked to the level of spirituality affecting physical and psychological well-being. This study aims to examine whether spirituality can predict the presence of psychosomatic symptoms by investigating the relationship between the prevalence of psychosomatic symptoms and the level of spirituality among university students in South Jordan. An exploratory cross-sectional design involving convenience samples and self-administered questionnaires using the twelveitem general health questionnaire including spirituality-based items were used to collect data for this study. A total of 1269 completed the study questionnaire. Students’ responses indicated various psychosomatic symptoms causing issues to better academic achievement, including students’ feeling of uselessness, followed by their lack of happiness, inability to make decisions and solve problems, and lack of concentration on what they are doing. They considered spirituality as an important part of their life. Lower scores on general health questionnaire were observed to have higher scores on spirituality items indicating that students with better spirituality practices have less psychological symptoms. Based on the findings of this study, the level of spirituality influences the prevalence of psychosomatic symptoms. Conducting educational programs to improve the spiritual well-being of students could be beneficial. Further, it is important that students’ affairs board at the university perform proper assessment and interventions to improve the spirituality level to decrease the impact of psychosomatic symptoms among students. 展开更多
