This paper reviews recent progress made by Chinese scientists on the pathways of influence of the Northern Hemisphere mid-high latitudes on East Asian climate within the framework of a“coupled oceanic-atmospheric(land-atmospheric or seaice-atmospheric)bridge”and“chain coupled bridge”.Four major categories of pathways are concentrated upon,as follows:Pathway A—from North Atlantic to East Asia;Pathway B—from the North Pacific to East Asia;Pathway C—from the Arctic to East Asia;and Pathway D—the synergistic effects of the mid-high latitudes and tropics.In addition,definitions of the terms“combined effect”,“synergistic effect”and“antagonistic effect”of two or more factors of influence or processes and their criteria are introduced,so as to objectively investigate those effects in future research. 展开更多

Internal incentives and operations strategies for the watersaving supply chain with cap-and-trade regulation

Faced with the rapid development of modem industries of agriculture, manufacturing, and services, water resources are becoming increasingly scarce. Industries with high water consumption are generally regulated by the government's water cap-and-trade (CAT) regulation to solve the contradiction between the limited water supply and the rapid growing water demand. Supply chain equilibrium and coordination models under the benchmark scenario without water saving and CAT regulation, watersaving supply chain equilibrium and coordination models under the scenario without/with CAT regulation are developed, analyzed and compared. The corresponding numerical and sensitivity analyses for all models are conducted and compared, and the managerial insights and policy recommendations are summarized in this article. The results indicate that (1) Conducting water saving could improve effectively the operational performance of the water-saving supply chain under the scenario without/with CAT regulation.(2) The coordination strategy based on the revenue sharing contract could efficiently coordinate the water-saving supply chain, enhance water consumption reduction rate, and improve the operational performance of the water-saving supply chain.(3) The implementation of CAT regulation enhances effectively water-consumptio reduction in the water-saving supply chain and improves the operational performance of water-saving supply chain.(4) Simultaneous implementation of CAT regulation by the government and adopting coordination strategy by the water-saving supply chain would be superior to any other scenarios/strategies.(5) A suitable water cap based on the industrial average water consumption and historical water consumption data are beneficial for constructing reasonable and effective incentive mechanism.(6) A higher marginal trade price could induce more reduction in water consumption and create better operational performance for the manufacturer and water-saving supply chain, both under the equilibrium and coordination strategies. 展开更多

This paper analyzes manufacturers’ wholesale price decisions and the evolutionarily stable strategies of the retailers’ marketing behavior in duopoly supply chains, where each chain consists of one manufacturer and many retailers. Each retailer chooses one of two marketing strategies: social responsibility or non-social responsibility (i.e., a firm only cares about the benefits of its shareholders). We identify the conditions under which a strategy profile is evolutionarily stable. Furthermore, we investigate the manufacturers’ wholesale prices and find the following:(i) the retailer’s social responsibility decreases the unit wholesale price;(ii) when the degree of the retailer’s social responsibility is medium, the social responsibility of the retailer in a supply chain increases the profit of the retailer’s own manufacturer and decreases the profit of the rival’s manufacturer;otherwise, it decreases the profits of the two manufacturers;and (iii) when each retailer exhibits its social responsibility moderately, a triple-win situation can be achieved. 展开更多

Human’s impact on earth through global warming is more or less an accepted fact.Ocean freight is estimated to contribute 4-5%of global carbon emissions.Many manufacturing companies that transfer ship goods through full container loads found themselves under-utilizing the containers and resulting in higher carbon footprint per volume shipment.One of the reasons is the choice of non-ideal container sizes for their shipments.In this paper,we first provide an Integer Programming model to minimize the companies’shipping carbon footprints by selecting the ideal container sizes appropriate for their shipment volumes.Secondly,we proposed a strategy to minimize the carbon footprint by consolidating the shipments in the same country from multiple domestic locations at a port of loading by road freight,before the international sea shipment.A mixed-Integer Programming model has been developed to determine if one should ship each shipment separately or have shipments consolidated first before being shipped.Consolidation fills up the containers more efficiently that reduces the overall carbon footprint.Computational results using real-world data indicates a significant 13.4%reduction carbon emission when selecting the optimal combinations of different sizes of containers and an additional 12.1%reduction in carbon emission when shipment consolidation is applied. 展开更多

The oil and gas industry has been the practitioner and beneficiary of the application of digital technology for decades;however, it seems to have become the 'laggard' in the new wave of digitization represented by 'CBIMA'(short for cloud computing, big data, the Internet of Things, mobile Internet and artificial intelligence). In the context of low and middling oil prices weakening the profitability of oil and gas companies, increasing competition for alternative energy sources and accelerating energy transformation, there is great potential for promoting the digital transformation of the oil and gas industry. Rebuilding competitiveness through digital transformation is increasingly becoming the consensus in the industry. It would be advisable for Chinese petroleum enterprises to take the initiative to adapt to the trend of digital transformation, formulate clear digital strategies and transformation roadmaps, actively and steadily carry out digital pilot projects, speed up the training of digital professionals and strive to achieve the best transformation results. 展开更多

Modeling Spatial–Temporal Dynamics of Urban Residential Fire Risk Using a Markov Chain Technique

This article applies a Markov chain method to compute the probability of residential fire occurrence based on past fire history. Fitted with the fire incidence data gathered over a period of 10 years in Melbourne, Australia,the spatially-integrated fire risk model predicts the likely occurrence of fire incidents using space and time as key model parameters. The mapped probabilities of fire occurrence across Melbourne show a city-centric spatial pattern where inner-city areas are relatively more vulnerable to a fire than outer suburbia. Fire risk reduces in a neighborhood when there is at least one fire in the last1 month. The results show that the time threshold of reduced fire risk after the fire occurrence is about 2 months.Fire risk increases when there is no fire in the last 1 month within the third-order neighborhood(within 5 km). A fire that occurs within this distance range, however, has no significant effect on reducing fire risk level within the neighborhood. The spatial–temporal dependencies of fire risk provide new empirical evidence useful for fire agencies to effectively plan and implement geo-targeted fire risk interventions and education programs to mitigate potential fire risk in areas where and when they are most needed. 展开更多

Trade Barriers and Participation in the Global Value Chain:An Empirical Study Based on Anti-dumping toward China

This paper investigates the effects of trade barriers on China s participation in the global value chain(GVC)using a thorough decomposition approach for trade volume,total exports,final exports and intermediate exports.Our econometric results indicate that anti-dumping(AD)measures initiated by trade partners have restrained the process of China s participation in the GVC.From 2000 to 2014,AD measures reduced the foreign value-added rate of total,final and intermediate exports by 4.5 to 28.7 percent,3.4 to 17 percent and 1.2 to 8.5 percent,respectively.In addition,suffering the effects of AD measures,China s GVC position index declined by 8.2 percent to 28.6 percent during this period.Moreover,AD measures have increased industries'upstream index by 3.2 to 13.7 percent over the same period.These results imply that both the petition and approval of AD cases has had a negative influence on the extent and position of China s GVC participation. 展开更多

Atypical chemokine receptors have recently emerged as important molecular players in health and diseases;they affect chemokine availability and function and impact a multitude of pathophysiological events,including the tumorigenesis process.This family of atypical receptors comprises five members:ACKR1/DARC,ACKR2/D6,ACKR3/CXCR7,ACKR4/CCRL1,and ACKR5/CCRL2.This work evaluated the differential expression of these receptors in prostate cancer using quantitative PCR.Further evaluation of CCRL2 at the protein level confirmed its overexpression in a metastatic cell line and in malignant prostatic tissues from patients.CCRL2,apresumed member of the atypical chemokine receptor family,plays akey role in lung dendritic cell trafficking to peripherally mphnodes.Recent studies have reported the expression of CCRL2 in different human cancer cell lines and tissues.However,its function and expression in prostate cancer has not been previously addressed. 展开更多

Stochastic gradient Markov chain Monte Carlo(SG-MCMC)has been developed as a flexible family of scalable Bayesian sampling algorithms.However,there has been little theoretical analysis of the impact of minibatch size to the algorithm’s convergence rate.In this paper,we prove that at the beginning of an SG-MCMC algorithm,i.e.,under limited computational budget/time,a larger minibatch size leads to a faster decrease of the mean squared error bound.The reason for this is due to the prominent noise in small minibatches when calculating stochastic gradients,motivating the necessity of variance reduction in SG-MCMC for practical use.By borrowing ideas from stochastic optimization,we propose a simple and practical variance-reduction technique for SG-MCMC,that is efficient in both computation and storage.More importantly,we develop the theory to prove that our algorithm induces a faster convergence rate than standard SG-MCMC.A number of large-scale experiments,ranging from Bayesian learning of logistic regression to deep neural networks,validate the theory and demonstrate the superiority of the proposed variance-reduction SG-MCMC framework. 展开更多

For bulk-heterojunction organic solar cells, the morphology of the blend films highly influence the exciton dissociation and charge transport process. In this work, two novel A-π-D-π-A (A represents the acceptor unit and D represents the donor unit) backbone structure small molecular electron donors based on two dimensional conjugated naphtho[1,2-b:5,6-b']dithiophene (NDT) with different end alkyl chains, named as NDT-3T-EH and NDT-3T-O, have been designed and synthesized. The photovoltaic property of NDT-3T-O-based device is better than that of the NDT-3T-EH and the best efficiency reaches 7.06%, and the photovoltaic property of NDT-3T-EH reaches 6.11%. The difference in the performance should be attributed to the different morphology and phase separation resulted from the different crystallinity and aggregation ability of two donors. The results demonstrate that the optimized end alkyl chains can be used to design A-π-D-π-A backbone structure small molecular electron donors for smallmolecule organic solar cells. 展开更多

The dynamics of measurement's uncertainty via entropy for a one-dimensional Heisenberg XYZ mode is examined in the presence of an inhomogeneous magnetic field and Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya (DM) interaction. It shows that the uncertainty of interest is intensively in connection with the filed's temperature, the direction-oriented coupling strengths and the magnetic field. It turns out that the stronger coupling strengths and the smaller magnetic field would induce the smaller measurement's uncertainty of interest within the current spin model. Interestingly, we reveal that the evolution of the uncertainty exhibits quite different dynamical behaviors in antiferromagnetic (Ji> 0) and ferromagnetic (Ji< 0) frames. Besides, an analytical solution related to the systematic entanglement (i.e., concurrence) is also derived in such a scenario. Furthermore, it is found that the DM-interaction is desirably working to diminish the magnitude of the measurement's uncertainty in the region of high-temperature. Finally, we remarkably offer a result ful strategy to govern the ent ropy-based uncertainty through utilizing quantum weak measurements, being of fundamentally importance to quantum measurement estimation in the context of solid-state-based quantum information processing and comp ut at ion. 展开更多

O6-methylguanine DNA methyltransferase (MGMT), a DNA repair enzyme, has been reported in some congenital malformations, but it is less frequently reported in neural tube defects. This study investigated MGMT mRNA expression and methylation levels in the early embryo and in different embryonic stages, as well as the relationship between MGMT and neural tube defects. Spina bifida aperta was induced in rats by a single intragastric administration of all-trans retinoic acid on embryonic day (E) 10, whereas normal control rats received the same amount of olive oil on the same embryonic day. DNA damage was assessed by detecting γ-H2A.X in spina bifida aperta rats. Real time-polymerase chain reaction was used to examine mRNA expression of MGMT in normal control and spina bifida aperta rats. In normal controls, the MGMT mRNA expression decreased with increasing embryonic days, and was remarkably reduced from E11 to E14, reaching a minimum at E18. In the spina bifida aperta model, γ-H2A.X protein expression was increased, and mRNA expression of MGMT was markedly decreased on E14, E16, and E18. Bisulfite sequencing polymerase chain reaction for MGMT promoter methylation demonstrated that almost all CpG sites in the MGMT promoter remained unmethylated in both spina bifida aperta rats and normal controls, and there was no significant difference in methylation level between the two groups on either E14 or E18. This paper summarizes the findings of an industry panel study evaluating how new Autonomous Intelligence technologies,such as artificial intelligence and machine learning,impact the system and operational architecture of supply chain control tower (CT) implementations that serve the pharmaceutical industry.Such technologies can shift CTs to a model in which real-time information gathering,analysis,and decision making are possible.This can be achieved by leveraging these technologies to better manage decision complexity and execute decisions at levels that cannot otherwise be managed easily by humans.Some of the key points identified are in the areas of the fundamental capabilities that need to be supported and the improved level of decision visibility that they provide.We also consider some the challenges in achieving this,which include data quality and integrity,collaboration and data sharing across supply chain tiers,cross-system interoperability,decision-validation and organizational impacts,among others. 展开更多
