A new look at roles of the cryosphere in sustainable development 预览

While the cryosphere may bring in adverse impacts on natural and built environment, it may also provide benefits resulting from cryosphere services. By looking into the effect of the cryosphere on human-being, the study develops a unified approach in the analysis of cryospheric risks and services, with one focusing on the adverse impacts by cryospheric hazards and another emphasizing on the benefits that people can obtain from the natural capitals in the cryosphere. Meanwhile, climate change could further alter and complicate the roles of the cryosphere, not only by the changes in risks to cryospheric hazards, but also the changes in services that could potentially add more risks. The study further proposed a risk-based approach for the development of climate adaptation in the cryosphere. The approach essentially takes options to reduce exposure and vulnerability of societies to cryospheric hazards, and to better manage natural capitals and demands together with enhancing utility of the cryosphere, so as to maintain the benefit of cryosphere services in a sustainable way. The study further addresses the role of cryosphere services in strengthening sustainable development in terms of its relation with the sustainable development goals (SDGs), and provides a preliminary results on how the services contributes to SDGs. Overall, the approach developed in this study creates a new way to comprehensively assess the effect of cryosphere changes on our society and identify measures to maximize the benefit while minimizing the risk in relation to the cryosphere. 展开更多

Zonag, Kusai, Hedin Noel and Yanhu Lakes are independent inland lakes in the Hoh Xil region on the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau. In September2011, Zonag Lake burst after the water level had increased for many years. Floods flowed through Kusai and Hedin Noel Lakes into Yanhu Lake;since then, the four small endorheic catchments merged into one larger catchment. This hydrological process caused the rapid shrinkage of Zonag Lake and continuous expansion of Yanhu Lake. In this study,based on satellite images, meteorological data and field investigations, we examined the dynamic changes in the four lakes and analyzed the influencing factors. The results showed that before 2011, the trends in the four lake areas were similar and displayed several stages. The change in the area of Zonag Lake corresponded well to the change in annual precipitation(AP), but the magnitude of the change was less than that of a non-glacier-fed lake. Although increased precipitation was the dominant factor that caused Zonag Lake to expand, increased glacier melting and permafrost thawing due to climate warming also had significant effects. After the 2011 outburst of Zonag Lake, due to the increasing AP and accelerating glacier melting, the increases in water volume of the three lakes were absorbed by Yanhu Lake, and Yanhu Lake expanded considerably. According to the rapid growth rates in water level and lake area, Yanhu Lake is likely to burst in 1-2 years. 展开更多

Climate change is expected to influence many of these hazards. Thus, climate-related risks over South Asia make disaster risk reduction(DRR) and climate change adaptation(CCA) key policy goals.Recently there is an increasing consensus that DRR including CCA should be embedded in development planning. Disaster risk reduction including CCA has progressively gained importance in global governance. Across South Asia, however, such integration is only in a preliminary stage. This review was to assess the existing status and scope of DRR including CCA in development projects across South Asia, so that an effective and achievable deliberation may be made to regional policymakers. A total of 371 projects relevant to CCA and DRR were reviewed.The project inventory was diverse in nature with respect to location, scale, sectoral focus, and strategic importance.Bangladesh, India, and Bhutan were observed to be proactive in implementing DRR-and CCA-related projects.Meta-analysis of the project inventory suggests an urgent need for an individual and collaborative convergence of processes for DRR and CCA through policies,plans, strategies, and programs. 展开更多

This study makes an attempt to investigate through statistical analysis the correlation between changes in ice volume and area of glaciers.Using data from nine sample glaciers in the Tian Shan,the results show that a linear relation exists between changes in ice volume and area,with a correlation coefficient of 0.700.However,the accuracy estimation is difficult due to the limited number of samples.The correlation was not improved after adding eleven glacier samples in other mountains.Two reference glaciers are then analyzed in more detail.The linear correlation coefficient is higher than 0.800 when using the observed changes in ice volume and area during different periods on Urumqi Glacier No.1,which suggests that the linear relation is valid for one glacier for different periods if its shape does not change noticeably and also for other glaciers of the same shape during the same period.The relation between changes in ice volume and area of Qingbingtan Glacier No.72 is different during different periods due to change in the shape of the glacier tongue and the influence of the debris cover.Moreover,errors in glacier-change monitoring and-volume estimation have an important influence on the correlation results.Therefore,further study needs to focus not only on the distinction between glacier types and between different periods but also on the accuracy of volume estimation. 展开更多

As is well known,clouds impact the radiative budget,climate change,hydrological processes,and the global carbon,nitrogen and sulfur cycles.To understand the wide-ranging effects of clouds,it is necessary to assess changes in cloud cover at high spatial and temporal resolution.In this study,we calculate global cloud cover during the day and at night using cloud products estimated from Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer(MODIS)data.Results indicate that the global mean cloud cover from 2003 to 2012 was 66%.Moreover,global cloud cover increased over this recent decade.Specifically,cloud cover over land areas(especially North America,Antarctica,and Europe)decreased(slope=–0.001,R~2=0.5254),whereas cloud cover over ocean areas(especially the Indian and Pacific Oceans)increased(slope=0.0011,R~2=0.4955).Cloud cover is relatively high between the latitudes of 36°S and 68°S compared to other regions,and cloud cover is lowest over Oceania and Antarctica.The highest rates of increase occurred over Southeast Asia and Oceania,whereas the highest rates of decrease occurred over Antarctica and North America.The global distribution of cloud cover regulates global temperature change,and the trends of these two variables over the 10-year period examined in this study(2003–2012)oppose one another in some regions.These findings are very important for studies of global climate change. 展开更多

Detection of land cover change helps in the understanding of how humans modify the natural environment.Modification is attributed to both restoration and degradation processes.Such information guides decisions on mitigating landscape degradation and advancing restoration.This study sets to determine land cover changes from 1973 to 2013 in the Malewa River Basin(1,760 km^2)in central rift valley,Kenya.Satellite imageries from Landsat(Landsat Multispectral Scanner,1973;Landsat TM(Thematic Mapper),1986;ETM+(Enhanced Thematic Mapper Plus),2000;and SPOT,2013)were analyzed using various imaging techniques available in ArcGIS 10.1 and ERDAS Imagine software.The results showed a cumulative growth of 25,617.0 ha(28.8%)in area under cropland,an increase of 4,310.1 ha(11.3%)in forestland and 688.0 ha(490.7%)of wetland.There was a net decrease of 28,953.8 ha(72.2%)in the area under shrubland and 1,747.4 ha(19.2%)under grassland.The findings suggest that increased demand for arable land is mainly driven by food and income needs of the human population.This exerted enormous pressure particularly on shrublands and grassland.Increased forest cover suggests an improvement in forest restoration efforts during the last ten years.There is need to manage expansion into new arable areas by improving land productivity and tackling the drivers of land cover change. 展开更多

Feature analysis of stratospheric wind and temperature fields over the Antigua site by rocket data 预览

The wind and temperature fields at 20 to 55 km above the Antigua launch site(17°N,61°W)were analyzed by using sounding rocket data published by the research organization on Stratosphere-Troposphere Processes and their Role in Climate(SPARC).The results showed distinct variations in the wind and temperature fields at different heights from the 1960s to the 1990s.The overall zonal wind speed showed a significant increasing trend with the year,and the overall change in meridional wind speed showed a falling trend from 1976 to 1990,whereas the temperature field showed a significant cooling trend from 1964 to 1990.The times the trends mutated varied at different levels.By taking the altitudes at 20,35,and 50 km as representatives,we found that the zonal wind speed trend had mutated in 1988,1986,and 1986,respectively;that the meridional wind speed trend had mutated in 1990,1986,and 1990,respectively;and that the temperature trend had mutated separately in 1977,1973,and 1967,respectively.Characteristics of the periodic wind and temperature field variations at different heights were also analyzed,and obvious differences were found in time scale variations across the different layers.The zonal and meridional wind fields were basically characterized as having a significant periodic variation of 5 years across the three layers,and each level was characterized as having a periodic variation of less than 5 years.Temperature field variation at the three levels was basically characterized as occurring in 10-year and 5-year cycles. 展开更多

Design change is one of the most common activities in design and development of mechanical products, and the change will affected by the design and maintenance of the products. It is not uncommon that multiple components might run out of order simultaneously during the use of a product, which would have significant influences on the product performance. Such kind of multi-component failure must be considered early in the product design stage, therefore it is necessary to study multiple design changes incurred by multi-component failure. Existing studies on the design change only focus on single change and ignore multiple simultaneous changes. To address this problem, a change influence network model is establishes, and the propagation path of multiple changes on the change influence network is described according to the change propagation characteristics of mechanical products. By analyzing the degree of dependence between the nodes and the absorption situations of nodes to change propagation, the possible paths of change propagation on the change influence network are determined, and based on which, calculation of the change influence is carried out, which provides decision-making support for product designers. Finally, the feasibility of the proposed methodology is demonstrated by taking a household juicer for case study. 展开更多

1980s-2010s中国陆地生态系统土壤碳储量的变化

Soil stores a large amount of the terrestrial ecosystem carbon(C) and plays an important role in maintaining global C balance. However, very few studies have addressed the regional patterns of soil organic carbon(SOC) storage and the main factors influencing its changes in Chinese terrestrial ecosystems, especially using field measured data. In this study, we collected information on SOC storage in main types of ecosystems(including forest, grassland, cropland, and wetland) across 18 regions in China during the 1980 s(from the Second National Soil Survey of China, SNSSC) and the 2010 s(from studies published between 2004 and 2014), and evaluated its changing trends during these 30 years. The SOC storage(0–100 cm) in Chinese terrestrial ecosystems was 83.46 ± 11.89 Pg C in the 1980 s and 86.50 ± 8.71 Pg C in the 2010 s, and the net increase over the 30 years was 3.04 ± 1.65 Pg C, with an overall rate of 0.101 ± 0.055 Pg C yr–1. This increase was mainly observed in the topsoil(0–20 cm). Forests, grasslands, and croplands SOC storage increased 2.52 ± 0.77, 0.40 ± 0.78, and 0.07 ± 0.31 Pg C, respectively, which can be attributed to the several ecological restoration projects and agricultural practices implemented. On the other hand, SOC storage in wetlands declined 0.76 ± 0.29 Pg C, most likely because of the decrease of wetland area and SOC density. Combining these results with those of vegetation C sink(0.100 Pg C yr–1), the net C sink in Chinese terrestrial ecosystems was about 0.201 ± 0.061 Pg C yr–1, which can offset 14.85%–27.79% of the fossil fuel C emissions from the 1980 s to the 2010 s. These first estimates of soil C sink based on field measured data supported the premise that China’s terrestrial ecosystems have a large C sequestration potential, and further emphasized the importance of forest protection and reforestation to increase SOC storage capacity. 展开更多

A new type of capric acid(CA)-acid expanded vermiculite(AEV) composite phase change material(PCM) with improved adsorption ability and interface adhesive strength was developed. Through the analysis of non-isothermal phase transition kinetics, modified vermiculite was observed to change and affect the phase transformation mechanism of the composite. AEV was treated with hydrochloric acid to improve the specific surface area and micro-pore structure. The surface area measured by BET increased from 81.94 m2/g for expanded vermiculite(EV) to 544.13 m2/g for AEV. CA-EV and CA-AEV composite PCMs were prepared by direct impregnation. The non-isothermal phase transition isotherms of CA-EV and CA-AEV were recorded by DSC at different heating rates(1, 5, 10, 15, and 20 ℃/min), which indicated that the phase transition rate increased with the heating rate and the phase transition process changed. Kinetics parameters were analyzed by a double extrapolation method. The activation energy(E) under the original state(Eα→0) of CA-AEV and CA-EV was 1 117 kJ/mol and 937 kJ/mol, respectively, and 1 205 kJ/mol and 1 016 kJ/mol under the thermal equilibrium state(Eβ→0). The most probabilistic mechanism function of CA-AEV satisfied G(α)=α2/3, which followed the Mample special rule, and the function of CA-EV satisfied G(α)=[(1+α)1/3-1]2, which followed the anti-Jander function. 展开更多

It tells a love triangle story among a human-Bena, a vampire-Adward and a werewolf-Jacob. At the beginning of the movie, Adward and Jacob are in mutually hostile-dependent relationship because of their love for Beria, and this girl finally chooses Adward as her husband which greatly exacerbates the conflicts between them. But this choice is not only a choice of love but also a choice of race. Since Adward is white while Jacob is a native American. What is hidden behind this love fight is actually the struggle between the races in America. Therefore, discrimination still exist in American society. However, the relationship between Adward and Jacob has changed a lot in the third series of The Twilight when Beria is in danger. At that time, they band together and try their best to protect her. A lot of stories happen between them, and at the end of the movie, Adward and Jacob finally become good friends which indicates that American racial discrimination has also been eased with the development of society and other factors. Therefore, people can learn about the change of American racial discrimination through studying the change of relationship between Adward and Jacob. 展开更多

目的探讨疾病监测报告模式的变革发展方向。方法通过分析我国现行疾病监测系统的发展,结合宜昌市健康管理大数据建设及在疾病监测报告领域的应用情况,获得今后疾病监测报告模式变革的启示。结果我国疾病监测信息系统取得了较快发展,但... 目的探讨疾病监测报告模式的变革发展方向。方法通过分析我国现行疾病监测系统的发展,结合宜昌市健康管理大数据建设及在疾病监测报告领域的应用情况,获得今后疾病监测报告模式变革的启示。结果我国疾病监测信息系统取得了较快发展,但仍然存在数据共享利用不充分,病例漏报、错报等问题;基于医院信息化的疾病监测信息管理取得了一些进展,但在数据互联共享和综合利用上有难度;宜昌市通过依托健康管理大数据分析中心建设,开展了疾病智能监测报告系统的建设与应用,并取得了一些成效。结论健康医疗大数据的背景下,疾病监测报告模式与管理将会出现信息系统向基层下沉、转向主动智能监测、危险因素监测、早期预警等一系列变革与发展。 展开更多
