From geological p... Mosul Dam is an earth fill dam located on the River Tigris northern part of Iraq. The capacity of its reservoir is 11.11 billion cubic meters which makes it the fourth biggest dam in the Middle East. From geological perspective, the dam is located on double plunging anticlines. The rocks of the site are mainly composed of highly jointed and karistified alternating beds of limestones, gysum and marls, since the impoundment of the reservoir seepage of water was recognized under the foundation of the dam. To stop or minimize the seepage, intensive grouting operations were conducted. Recent investigations and evaluation of the conditions of the dam indicate that it is in a critical situation. In this paper, consequences of the dam failure are discussed and possible solutions are given. 展开更多

堤坝脉动注浆浆液扩散机制及应用研究

基于脉动注浆泵可输出低频周期性脉冲压力的特点,结合可控性黏土固化浆液,提出了一种可用于堤坝防渗加固的新方法。通过进行原型试验验证了该方法的可行性,考虑钻孔扰动和脉动低频重复压力对地层渗透特性的影响,推导了黏土固化浆液脉动... 基于脉动注浆泵可输出低频周期性脉冲压力的特点,结合可控性黏土固化浆液,提出了一种可用于堤坝防渗加固的新方法。通过进行原型试验验证了该方法的可行性,考虑钻孔扰动和脉动低频重复压力对地层渗透特性的影响,推导了黏土固化浆液脉动扩散方程,运用多场耦合软件COMSOL探讨了脉动压力下黏土固化浆液扩散的机制,最后将研究成果成功应用于南水北调中线鹤壁段引水渠道边坡帷幕注浆工程。研究结果表明:黏土固化浆液脉动控制注浆技术可显著提高地层连续性和整体性,结石体28 d强度大于2 MPa,渗透系数可降至10-5cm/s左右,浆液在注浆孔附近与土体胶结成块,邻近注浆孔浆脉交错搭接,整体表现为空间立体网状包裹结构的防渗墙体;对数值模拟和现场试验结果进行综合分析,堤坝脉动注浆时间应控制在1 800~2 400 s之间,合理的脉动注浆压力在0.2~2 MPa之间,脉动持续时间宜调至4~8 s,脉动间隔时间宜调至2~6 s,这样有利于保证堤坝脉动注浆工程达到最优的防渗加固效果;工程实践的渠道边坡连续性、整体性得到了改善,注浆止水加固效果显著,检查孔渗透系数降至10-5 cm/s,所取芯样完整,芯样最长可达40 cm。 展开更多

Erosion and transport mechanisms of mine waste along gullies

Mine waste debris flows continue to occur in China, and the disaster prevention and mitigation of these flows faces severe challenges since the mechanisms determining erosion and transport of mine waste along gullies are not yet fully understood. The erosion and delivery process of mine waste heaps was reproduced through flume experiments with the method based on field survey data of the Daxicha mine waste debris flow gully in the Xiaoqinling gold mining area. The results showed that the erosion and movement of mine wastes could be divided into three modes: minimal sediment movement, sediment sorting and delivery, and a large amount of sediment transfer. Moreover, there was an obvious amplification effect on peak discharge along with the formation and failure of temporary landslide dams during the erosion process. The correlation between the coefficient of peak discharge amplification and three dimensionless influencing factors, flume gradient, dimensionless volume, and dimensionless particle size, were comprehensively analyzed. An empirical formula for the coefficient of peak discharge amplification was proposed and verified based on 16 sets of experimental data. These preliminary results can provide a scientific reference for future research on disaster prevention and mitigation of mine waste debris flows. 展开更多

Shape design of arch dams under load uncertainties with robust optimization

Due to an increased need in hydro-electricity, water storage, and flood protection, it is assumed that a series of new dams will be build throughout the world. The focus of this paper is on the non-probabilistic-based design of new arch-type dams by applying means of robust design optimization (RDO). This type of optimization takes into account uncertainties in the loads and in the material properties of the structure. As classical procedures of probabilistic-based optimization under uncertainties, such as RDO and reliability-based design optimization (RBDO), are in general computationally expensive and rely on estimates of the system’s response variance, we will not follow a full-probabilistic approach but work with predefined confidence levels. This leads to a bi-level optimization program where the volume of the dam is optimized under the worst combination of the uncertain parameters. As a result, robust and reliable designs are obtained and the result is independent from any assumptions on stochastic properties of the random variables in the model. The optimization of an arch-type dam is realized here by a robust optimization method under load uncertainty, where hydraulic and thermal loads are considered. The load uncertainty is modeled as an ellipsoidal expression. Comparing with any traditional deterministic optimization method, which only concerns the minimum objective value and offers a solution candidate close to limit-states, the RDO method provides a robust solution against uncertainty. To reduce the computational cost, a ranking strategy and an approximation model are further involved to do a preliminary screening. By this means, the robust design can generate an improved arch dam structure that ensures both safety and serviceability during its lifetime. 展开更多

Accurate prediction of the hydrographs of outburst floods induced by landslide dam overtopping failure is necessary for hazard prevention and mitigation. In this study, flume model tests on the breaching of landslide dams were conducted. Unconsolidated soil materials with wide grain size distributions were used to construct the dam. The effects of different upstream inflow discharges and downstream bed soil erosion on the outburst peak discharge were investigated. Experimental results reveal that the whole hydrodynamic process of landslide dam breaching can be divided into three stages as defined by clear inflection points and peak discharges. The larger the inflow discharge, the shorter the time it takes to reach the peak discharge, and the larger the outburst flood peak discharge. The scale of the outburst floods was found to be amplified by the presence of an erodible bed located downstream of the landslide dam. This amplification decreases with the increase of upstream inflow. In addition, the results show that the existence of an erodible bed increases the density of the outburst flow, increasing its probability of transforming from a sediment flow to a debris flow. 展开更多

A sabo dam has a purpose to block the path of debris flow.However,when overflow occurs,a sabo dam works as a weir,a vertical obstruction,where the fluid must flow over.Many empirical formulas and discharge coefficients for weirs relating flow depth to discharge have been proposed to calculate overflow discharges.However,only a few studies about overflow discharge coefficients are available in the case of debris flow.In this paper,experiments and numerical simulations were done to estimate debris flow discharge coefficients by considering the sediment concentration.In the numerical simulation,a complete overflow equation and a free overfall equation were implemented to calculate debris overflow discharges at a sabo dam.To determine the discharge coefficients for each equation,single factor regression analysis was used.Laboratory experiments were done to calibrate and to compare with the simulation.Study results showed that the discharge coefficients increase as the sediment concentration increases.This finding suggests debris flow discharge coefficients are derived to calculate the debris overflow discharges at a sabo dam. 展开更多

The hydrodynamic pressure is an important load on concrete face rockfill dams (CFRDs) subjected to earthquakes,the influence of which,however,is not clear as compared with that in concrete dams.In this paper,the coupling effect between the CFRDs and the reservoir water is studied based on two-dimensional finite element simulations by using a verified procedure.It is found that neglecting the solid-fluid coupling effect not only results in an overestimation of the acceleration response within the rockfill materials but also makes an overestimation of the dynamical stresses in the concrete slabs.For a reliable seismic response analysis of the CFRDs,therefore,the hydrodynamic pressure should be taken into account,particularly when the dam is subjected to a simultaneous excitation in both horizontal and vertical directions.Numerical results show,however,that the compressibility of the water can be safely neglected in the seismic response analyses of the CFRDs even when the dam is as high as 300 m,except when the excitation is quite abundant in high frequency contents. 展开更多
