No-reference synthetic image quality assessment with convolutional neural network and local image saliency

Depth-image-based rendering(DIBR) is widely used in 3 DTV, free-viewpoint video, and interactive 3 D graphics applications. Typically, synthetic images generated by DIBR-based systems incorporate various distortions, particularly geometric distortions induced by object dis-occlusion. Ensuring the quality of synthetic images is critical to maintaining adequate system service. However, traditional 2 D image quality metrics are ineffective for evaluating synthetic images as they are not sensitive to geometric distortion. In this paper, we propose a novel no-reference image quality assessment method for synthetic images based on convolutional neural networks, introducing local image saliency as prediction weights. Due to the lack of existing training data, we construct a new DIBR synthetic image dataset as part of our contribution. Experiments were conducted on both the public benchmark IRCCyN/IVC DIBR image dataset and our own dataset. Results demonstrate that our proposed metric outperforms traditional 2 D image quality metrics and state-of-the-art DIBR-related metrics. 展开更多

Medical imaging is now being reshaped by artificial intelligence (AI) and progressing rapidly toward future.In this article,we review the recent progress of AI-enabled medical imaging.Firstly,we briefly review the background about AI in its way of evolution.Then,we discuss the recent successes of AI in different medical imaging tasks,especially in image segmentation,registration,detection and recognition.Also,we illustrate several representative applications of AI-enabled medical imaging to show its advantage in real scenario,which includes lung nodule in chest CT,neuroimaging,mammography,and etc.Finally,we report the way of human-machine interaction.We believe that,in the future,AI will not only change the traditional way of medical imaging,but also improve the clinical routines of medical care and enable many aspects of the medical society. 展开更多

Discernible image mosaic with edge-aware adaptive tiles

We present a novel method to produce discernible image mosaics, with relatively large image tiles replaced by images drawn from a database, to resemble a target image. Compared to existing works on image mosaics, the novelty of our method is two-fold.Firstly, believing that the presence of visual edges in the final image mosaic strongly supports image perception,we develop an edge-aware photo retrieval scheme which emphasizes the preservation of visual edges in the target image. Secondly, unlike most previous works which apply a pre-determined partition to an input image, our image mosaics are composed of adaptive tiles, whose sizes are determined based on the available images in the database and the objective of maximizing resemblance to the target image. We show discernible image mosaics obtained by our method, using image collections of only moderate size. To evaluate our method, we conducted a user study to validate that the image mosaics generated present both globally and locally appropriate visual impressions to the human observers. Visual comparisons with existing techniques demonstrate the superiority of our method in terms of mosaic quality and perceptibility. 展开更多

Recently, deep learning techniques have emerged and blossomed, producing " the state-of-the-art” in many domains. Due to their capability in feature extraction and mapping, it is very helpful to predict high-frequency details lost in low-resolution images. In this paper, we give an overview of recent advances in deep learning-based models and methods that have been applied to single image super-resolution tasks. We also summarize, compare and discuss various models from the past and present for comprehensive understanding and finally provide open problems and possible directions for future research. 展开更多

This paper evaluates the place of public relations in the image management strategies of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) particularly after the infamous “Oga at the Top” interview by the Lagos State Commandant of the Corps. The paper uses questionnaire and the interview schedule as instruments to gather data from members of the public who are familiar with the “Oga at the Top” incident and the public relations officers (PROs) of the NSCDC respectively. From the data gathered, we conclude that the NSCDC adopted different image management strategies to salvage the corporate image of the Corps;that the image management strategies have engendered a cordial relationship between the media and the Corps;and that the infamous “Oga at the Top” incident brought some fame to the Corps as free advertisement as well as questioned the capacity of its officials to discharge their duties effectively. As a fallout of this evaluation, it is recommended that NSCDC management should endeavour to engage only professionals in the field of public relations who would understand and implement public relations objectives and functions in the organisation and that all ranking officers of the NSCDC should endeavour to involve the public relations unit in all their engagement with the external publics to avoid a repeat of the “Oga at the Top” incident that affected the Corps’ image negatively. 展开更多

Ultrasound imaging technique is one of the most non-invasive, practically harmless to the human body, accurate, cost effective and real-time techniques in medical diagnosis. However, ultrasound images suffer from the so-called speckle noise because of the imaging principle. The speckle noise reduces the quality and visibility of ultrasound images, thereby decreasing overall reliability of the images and interfering with the clinical diagnosis. In this paper, we propose a novel variational model under a combination of total variation regularization and Weberized total variation regularization and prove the existence and uniqueness of the minimizer for the variational problem. In order to efficiently solve the associated Euler-Lagrange equation consisting of nonlinear partial differential equation, we apply a finite difference method and develop several numerical techniques for solving the resulting discrete system. Numerical experiments on various synthetic and real ultrasound images not only confirm that our improved model is effective, but also it can provide significant improvement over evaluated models. Moreover, they also show that our proposed multigrid method has great potential applications to medical ultrasound imaging technique in delivering fast, accurate, and visually pleasing res to ration resul ts. 展开更多

Depth discontinuity edge affects the visual quality of synthesized images in 3D image warping.However,it suffers from accuracy degradation when up-sampled from low-resolution depth maps,especially at large scaling factors.To preserve the accuracy of depth discontinuity,a novel joint bilateral depth super-resolution with intensity guidance method is proposed.Particularly,the fast local intensity classification is exploited to estimate depth coefficients in joint bilateral up-sampling for depth maps,so as to eliminate depth discontinuity edge misalignment.Additionally,the proposed method is accelerated on graphic processing units(GPUs)to meet the requirement of realtime application.Experiments demonstrate that our method can preserve the accuracy of depth discontinuity edges after super resolution,leveraging the visual quality of synthesized image in 3D image warping. 展开更多

To improve the quality of the infrared image and enhance the information of the object,a dual band infrared image fusion method based on feature extraction and a novel multiple pulse coupled neural network(multi-PCNN)is proposed.In this multi-PCNN fusion scheme,the auxiliary PCNN which captures the characteristics of feature image extracting from the infrared image is used to modulate the main PCNN,whose input could be original infrared image.Meanwhile,to make the PCNN fusion effect consistent with the human vision system,Laplacian energy is adopted to obtain the value of adaptive linking strength in PCNN.After that,the original dual band infrared images are reconstructed by using a weight fusion rule with the fire mapping images generated by the main PCNNs to obtain the fused image.Compared to wavelet transforms,Laplacian pyramids and traditional multi-PCNNs,fusion images based on our method have more information,rich details and clear edges. 展开更多

Nowadays, 3D object detection, which uses the color and depth information to find object localization in the 3D world and estimate their physical size and pose, is one of the most important 3D perception tasks in the field of computer vision. In order to solve the problem of mixed segmentation results when multiple instances appear in one frustum in the F-PointNet method and in the occlusion that leads to the loss of depth information, a 3D object detection approach based on instance segmentation and image restoration is proposed in this paper. Firstly, instance segmentation with Mask R-CNN on an RGB image is used to avoid mixed segmentation results. Secondly, for the detected occluded objects, we remove the occluding object first in the depth map and then restore the empty pixel region by utilizing the Criminisi Algorithm to recover the missing depth information of the object. The experimental results show that the proposed method improves the average precision score compared with the F-PointNet method. 展开更多

Digital mosaics have usually used regular tiles, simulating historical tessellated mosaics. In this paper, we present a method for synthesizing pebble mosaics, a historical mosaic style in which the tiles are rounded pebbles. We address both the tiling problem,of distributing pebbles over the image plane so as to approximate the input image content, and the problem of geometry, creating a smooth rounded shape for each pebble. We adopt simple linear iterative clustering(SLIC)to obtain elongated tiles conforming to image content,and smooth the resulting irregular shapes into shapes resembling pebble cross-sections. Then, we create an interior and exterior contour for each pebble and solve a Laplace equation over the region between them to obtain height-field geometry. The resulting pebble set approximates the input image while representing full geometry that can be rendered and textured for a highly detailed representation of a pebble mosaic. 展开更多

In this paper, we propose a novel quantum secret image-sharing scheme which constructs m quantum secret images into m+1 quantum share images. A chaotic image generated by the logistic map is utilized to assist in the construction of quantum share images first. The chaotic image and secret images are expressed as quantum image representation by using the novel enhanced quantum representation. To enhance the confidentiality, quantum secret images are scrambled into disordered images through the Arnold transform. Then the quantum share images are constructed by performing a series of quantum swap operations and quantum controlled-NOT operations. Because all quantum operations are invertible, the original quantum secret images can be reconstructed by performing a series of inverse operations. Theoretical analysis and numerical simulation proved both the security and low computational complexity of the scheme, which has outperformed its classical counterparts. It also provides quantum circuits for sharing and recovery processes. 展开更多

The lander location is precisely determined to be(177.588°E, 45.457°S) using these techniques. Defocus blur is one of the primary problems among hyperspectral imaging systems equipped with simple lenses. Most of the previous deblurring methods focus on how to utilize structure information of a single channel, while ignoring the characteristics of hyperspectral images. In this work, we analyze the correlations and differences among spectral channels, and propose a deblurring framework for defocus hyperspectral images. First, we divide the hyperspectral image channels into two sets, and the set with less blur is treated as a group of spectral bases. Then, according to the inherent correlations of spectral channels, a reference image can be derived from the spectral bases to guide the restoration of blurry channels. Finally, considering the disagreement between the reference image and the ground truth, a scale map based on gradient similarity is introduced as a prior in the deblurring framework. The experimental results on public dataset demonstrate that the proposed method outperforms several image deblurring methods in both visual effect and quality metrics. 展开更多

Cover ratio of cloud is a very important factor which affects the quality of a satellite image, therefore cloud detection from satellite images is a necessary step in assessing the image quality. The study on cloud detection from the visual band of a satellite image is developed. Firstly, we consider the differences between the cloud and ground including high grey level, good continuity of grey level, area of cloud region, and the variance of local fractal dimension (VLFD) of the cloud region. A single cloud region detection method is proposed. Secondly, by introducing a reference satellite image and by comparing the variance in the dimensions corresponding to the reference and the tested images, a method that detects multiple cloud regions and determines whether or not the cloud exists in an image is described. By using several Ikonos images, the performance of the proposed method is demonstrated. 展开更多
