Time-series photometry was made for the large-amplitude δ Scuti star AD CMi in 2005 and 2006. High-quality photometric data provided in the literature were used to analyze the pulsation of the star, with the derived multiple frequencies fitted to our new data. Besides the dominant frequency and its harmonics, one low frequency (2.27402 c d -1) is discovered, which provides a reasonable interpretation for the long-noticed luminosity variation at the maximum and minimum light. Combining the nine new times of light maxima determined from the new data with the 64 times collected from the literature, we analyzed the long-term variability of AD CMi with the O - C technique. The results provide the updated value of period of 0.122974478 days, and seem to be in favor of the model of combination of the evolutionary effect and light-time effect of a binary system, of which some parameters are hereby deduced. 展开更多

The wide field of the Schmidt telescope implies a greater chance of the field containing bright objects, and the presence of a corrector lens produces a certain type of ghost images. We summarize and confirm the features of such ghost images in Schmidt CCD photometry. The ghost images could be star-like under special observational conditions. The zenith distance of the telescope, among other factors, is found to correlate with different patterns of the ghost images. Some relevant issues are discussed and possible applications of our results are suggested. 展开更多

GSC 4560-02157 is a new eclipsing cataclysmic variable with an orbital period of 0.265359 days.By using the published V- and R-band data together with our observations,we discovered that the O-C curve of GSC 4560-0215... GSC 4560-02157 is a new eclipsing cataclysmic variable with an orbital period of 0.265359 days.By using the published V- and R-band data together with our observations,we discovered that the O-C curve of GSC 4560-02157 may show a cyclic variation with a period of 3.51 years and an amplitude of 1.40 min.If this variation is caused by a light travel-time effect via the existence of a third body,then its mass can be derived as M3 sin i′≈91.08 MJup,and it should be a low-mass star.In addition,several physical parameters were measured.The color of the secondary star was determined to be V-R =0.77(±0.03) which corresponds to a spectral type of K2-3.The secondary star’s mass was estimated as M2 = 0.73(±0.02) M☉ by combing the derived V-R value around phase 0 with the assumption that it obeys the mass-luminosity relation for main sequence stars.This mass is consistent with the mass-period relation for CV donor stars.For the white dwarf,the eclipse durations and contacts of the white dwarf yield an upper limit on the white dwarf’s radius corresponding to a lower limit on mass of M1≈0.501 M☉.The overestimated radius and previously published spectral data indicate that the boundary layer may have a very high temperature. 展开更多
Sequential clustering of star formations in IC 1396

We present a comprehensive study of the H II region IC 1396 and its star forming activity, in which multi-wavelength data ranging from the optical to the near-and far-infrared were employed. The surface density distribution of all the 2MASS sources with a certain detection toward IC 1396 indicates the existence of a compact cluster spatially consistent with the position of the exciting source of the H II region, HD 206267. The spatial distribution of the sources with excessive infrared emission, selected based on archived 2MASS data, reveals the existence of four sub-clusters in this region. One is associated with the open cluster Trumpler 37. The other three are found to be spatially coincident with the bright rims of the H II region. All the sources with excessive emission in the near infrared are cross-identified with AKARI IRC data. An analysis of the spectral energy distributions (SEDs) of the resultant sample leads to the identification of eight CLASS I, 15 CLASS II and 15 CLASS III sources in IC 1396. Optical identification of the sample sources with R magnitudes brighter than 17 mag corroborates the results from the SED analysis. Based on the spatial distribution of the infrared young stellar objects at different evolutionary stages, the surrounding sub-clusters located in the bright rims are believed to be younger than the central one. This is consistent with a scenario of sequential star formation in this region. Imaging data of a dark patch in IC 1396 by Herschel SPIRE, on the other hand, indicate the presence of two far-infrared cores in LDN 1111, which are likely to be a new generation of protostellar objects in formation. So we infer that the star formation process in this H II region was not continuous but rather episodic. 展开更多
