The bioconversion process of municipal solid waste was assessed on the basis of the results obtained from the biodrying reactor working at a full industrial scale.The bio-reactor is a part of mechanical-biological installation following mechanical stage.The bio-reactor was equipped with measuring devices allowing the analysis of the parameters like:temperature both inside the waste and also air above the waste and also the humidity of waste during the 14 days of the biodrying process.The kinetics of bioconversion was assessed basing on measured the loss of ignition(LOI)parameter detected during the biodrying process.The LOI value of the samples varied from 17.03%Am.to 30.34%d.m.depending on the location inside the reactor.The estimated kinetic rate constant kT of the bioconversion of biomass in the industrial reactor was kT=0.3141.In analyzed case study the calorific value of product leaving the full-scale bio-reactor is too low to use this product as an alternative fuel.As w'as stated the reason of this is too low a share of the carbon-rich fraction in the feedstock. 展开更多

The objective of this work is to investigate the influence of contact pressure and sliding speed on the coefficient of friction and wear of an activated carbon-epoxy composite derived from palm kernel under dry sliding conditions.A wear mode map approach was employed to identify the transitions from mild to severe wear of the composite.The dry sliding test was executed by utilizing a ball-on-disc tribometer at different contact pressures and sliding speeds with a constant sliding distance and operating temperature.The results showed that,regardless of the sliding speed,the friction coefficient and wear rate of the composite increased drastically when a critical limit of contact pressure is exceeded.As for the sliding speed,both the friction coefficient and wear rate increased first and thereafter decreased at a higher speed of 500 rpm.A wear mode map is proposed to classify the boundary from mild to severe wear regimes.The predominant wear failures identified include micro-crack,fine grooves,debonding,delamination,debris,broken carbon,and fracture. 展开更多

The utilization of waste products as valuable materials was a technical imperative for waste management.In this study,the cost-effective attapulgite/carbon (APT/C)composite was developed for wastewater treatment using waste hot-pot oil as a carbon precursor through a facile one-step calcination process.The APT/C composite prepared at 300℃ exhibited the excellent adsorption capacity and rapid equilibrium rate over a broad pH range for the removal of various pollutants.More importantly,the removal ratios of the composites toward Methyl Violet and tetracycline still remained 77.6% and 60.2% of the initial adsorption capacity after ten adsorption-regeneration cycles via a facile thermal regeneration strategy,respectively. Beyond all doubt,this research provided a feasible and economical way for the sustainable utilization of waste hot-pot oil in wastewater treatment,achieving the concept of disposal waste with waste and recycling. 展开更多

The asphalt pavement industry that consumes a ... The escalating mass of solid waste at an overwhelming sum requires a global attention to strive for efficient waste management and to outsource the ecological treatments. The asphalt pavement industry that consumes a vast scale of natural resources while contributing to thermal and greenhouse emissions is viewed as a high potential alternative for the application of solid waste as asphalt modifier and substantial waste reduction. In efforts to urge for cleaner and greener asphalt production, a growing trend towards usage of solid waste as a renewable material is paving a sustainable future for the asphalt pavement industry. The economic options of incorporating solid waste into the asphaltic mixture coupled with proven effective performances are a green and cost-effective alternative to mitigate various pavement distresses. Various options either as coarse or fine aggregates and as fillers in powder, ash, or fibre form are to stimulate further research interest to incorporate a diversified range of solid waste into the asphalt binder and asphalt mixture. Prior to incorporating solid waste into the asphaltic mixture through the selected options, prerequisite tests in addressing engineering limitations due to the unknown properties of solid waste are reviewed. The concerns on environmental impact are given heavy metals leaching possibilities into water sources are addressed by Toxicity Characterization Leaching Procedure test, to leverage further the systematic reuse of solid waste in steering towards the cleaner production of the asphalt mixture. The microcosmic traits of solid waste namely surface morphology, mineralogical composition and chemical composition are summarized based on the usage of Scanning Electron Microscope, X-Ray Diffraction, and X-Ray Fluorescence, respectively. This systematic review is an enactment and stimulus for researchers to have a general overview before incorporating solid waste into asphalt mixture. 展开更多

Impact of municipal solid waste incineration on heavy metals in the surrounding soils by multivariate analysis and lead isotope analysis

Municipal solid waste(MSW) incineration has become an important anthropogenic source of heavy metals(HMs) to the environment. However, assessing the impact of MSW incineration on HMs in the environment, especially soils, can be a challenging task because of various HM sources. To investigate the effect of MSW incineration on HMs in soils, soil samples collected at different distances from four MSW incinerators in Shanghai, China were analyzed for their contents of eight HMs(antimony, cadmium, chromium, copper,lead, mercury, nickel, and zinc) and lead(Pb) isotope ratios. Source identification and apportionment of HMs were accomplished using principal component analysis and Pb isotope analysis. Results indicated that the relatively high contents of cadmium, lead,antimony, and zinc in the soils at 250 m and 750–1250 m away from the MSW incinerators were related to MSW incineration, while the elevated contents of the other four HMs were associated with other anthropogenic activities. Based on Pb isotope analysis, the contribution ratio of MSW incineration(which had been operated for more than 14 years)to the accumulation of Pb in soil was approximately 10% on average, which was lower than coal combustion only. Incinerator emissions of Pb could have a measurable effect on the soil contamination within a limited area(≤1500 m). 展开更多

Mine waste debris flows continue to occur in China, and the disaster prevention and mitigation of these flows faces severe challenges since the mechanisms determining erosion and transport of mine waste along gullies are not yet fully understood. The erosion and delivery process of mine waste heaps was reproduced through flume experiments with the method based on field survey data of the Daxicha mine waste debris flow gully in the Xiaoqinling gold mining area. The results showed that the erosion and movement of mine wastes could be divided into three modes: minimal sediment movement, sediment sorting and delivery, and a large amount of sediment transfer. Moreover, there was an obvious amplification effect on peak discharge along with the formation and failure of temporary landslide dams during the erosion process. The correlation between the coefficient of peak discharge amplification and three dimensionless influencing factors, flume gradient, dimensionless volume, and dimensionless particle size, were comprehensively analyzed. An empirical formula for the coefficient of peak discharge amplification was proposed and verified based on 16 sets of experimental data. These preliminary results can provide a scientific reference for future research on disaster prevention and mitigation of mine waste debris flows. 展开更多

To explore the behavior of radiolytically produced hydrogen release from the waste resin stored in a high integrated container (HIC), and the mechanism of hydrogen diffusion in a near-surface disposal facility, both experimental studies and numerical simulations were performed through an accelerated irradiation test and simulated disposal, respectively. Results indicated that, 100 years after disposal, the highest hydrogen concentration appeared in the cell where the HICs were placed. The volume fraction for different scenarios postulated in the numerical simulation was 2.64% for Scenario 1, 2.28% for Scenario 2, and 3.965% for Scenario 3, all of which are lower than the hydrogen explosion limit of 4.1%. The results indicated that the simulated HIC disposal scheme is safe. 展开更多

The digestate can be used as a soil amendment or crop fertiliser. The aims of our work were to evaluate 1) the physicochemical composition and pathogen content in a digestate from poultry manure, according to international regulations, and 2) the effect of its soil application on the major chemical and biological soil properties and on the growth of Lactuca sativa. The experiment consisted of two groups of pots(with and without crop). Treatments applied to each group were as follows: low and high doses of digestate and inorganic fertiliser, and no application(control)(low dose: 70 kg nitrogen(N) ha-1 and 21 kg phosphorus(P) ha-1;high dose: 210 kg N ha-1 and 63 kg P ha-1). Soil samples were taken 7 and 34 d(harvest) after treatment applications. Heavy metal and pathogen contents in the digestate were below the upper limit values. Despite the high pH and electrical conductivity values of the digestate, both soil parameters presented acceptable values for crop growth. Although there were no initial increases in total inorganic N and available P in soil with digestate application, an increase in the fresh weight of crop was observed with the high dose application. This is probably associated with the slow nutrient release from the digestate during the development of the crop. Changes in the microbial community were temporary and occurred at the initial sampling stage of the experiment. 展开更多

Biochar Combined with Vermicompost Increases Crop Production While Reducing Ammonia and Nitrous Oxide Emissions from a Paddy Soil

Organic amendments such as vermicompost and biochar have been reported to enhance soil fertility and crop productivity.However, whether the co-application of both amendments has synergistic effects or whether such benefits are accompanied by the risk of gaseous nitrogen(N) loss in an agroecosystem remains unknown. A soil column experiment with a fully factorial design was conducted using three levels of vermicompost(no dose, low dose(1%, weight:weight), and high dose(3%, weight:weight)) without or with biochar(1%, weight:weight) to investigate their effects on rice growth and gaseous N loss across the crop growing season. Our results demonstrated that synergistic interactions existed between vermicompost and biochar in promoting crop yield. Compared with biochar amendment alone, biochar combined with vermicompost significantly(P < 0.01) increased rice yield by 26.5%–35.3%. However,high dose of vermicompost significantly(P < 0.01) increased the cumulative ammonia(NH3) and nitrous oxide(N2O) emissions. In the presence of vermicompost, the incorporation of biochar amendment significantly(P < 0.01) decreased the cumulative N2O emission by 14.1%–18.6%. The lowest emission factor value of NH3 and N2O was achieved using biochar in combination with low dose of vermicompost. This study revealed that the combination of biochar and moderate dose of vermicompost offers a novel approach to promote crop productivity while reducing the environmental risk. 展开更多

Current use of enrichment and processing technologies of ores requires the introduction of closed circuits of water treatment.A decrease in technological properties is caused by accumulations of ion-molecular components in the circulating water.The objective of the simulation is to determine the maximum allowable concentrations of ions and molecules as well as the choice of conditions for deposition or adsorption.First of all,our examinations decrease the concentration of copper ions and fatty acids in the circulating water.By pre-mixing water with the highest concentration of these ions,a reduction of copper ion and fatty acid concentrations in the recycled water occurs.The results do not only ensure the achievement of the maximum permitted concentration(MPC)of copper and iron,significantly reducing the amount of oxidized copper,they also make it possible to use the united sewage as current water for the flotation process.Mixing and adding filtrate of tailings,discharges of urban wastewater treatment and effluent of ash pit of thermal power stations(TPS)to recycled water causes an increase in the capacity of the enrichment plant by 15-17%. 展开更多

Deinking is an important process in waste paper recycling process,and this study mainly focuses on the properties of the deinking agent and process optimization.DIA-30 prepared in our laboratory,and FS and LD,were the three representative deinking agents studied herein.Brightness,effective residual ink concentration(ERIC),dirt,macro-stickies,fiber loss during repulping,flotation,and washing processes were measured to evaluate the performance of the deinking agents and optimize process conditions.Each of the deinking agents exhibited different advantages:DIA-30 was optimal for deinking efficiency,brightness enhancement,as well as dirt and macrostickies removal,whereas LD was optimal for ink removal during flotation process but performed poorly in terms of brightness enhancement.FS showed a relatively balanced performance compared to those of DIA-30 and LD in the deinking process,but DIA-30 is the best option for deinking due to its outstanding comprehensive properties.The optimal repulping conditions for the deinking of 100%old magzines(OMG)using DIA-30 are as follows:repulping temperature,60℃;pulp consistency,13 wt%;repulping time,20 min;H2O2 dosage,0.5 wt%(oven-dried pulp);NaOH dosage,1.2 wt%(oven-dried pulp);Na2SiO3 dosage,0.3 wt%(oven-dried pulp);and optimum DIA-30 dosage,0.1 wt%. 展开更多
