Source attribution for mercury deposition with an updated atmospheric mercury emission inventory in the Pearl River Delta Region, China

We used CMAQ-Hg to simulate mercury pollution and identify main sources in the Pearl River Delta (PR.D) with updated local emission inventory and latest regional and global emissions. The total anthropogenic mercury emissions in the PRD for 2014 were 11,939.6 kg. Power plants and industrial boilers were dominant sectors, responsible for 29.4 and 22.7%. We first compared model predictions and observations and the results showed a good performance. Then five scenarios with power plants (PP), municipal solid waste incineration (MSWI), industrial point sources (IP), natural sources (NAT), and boundary conditions (BCs) zeroed out separately were simulated and compared with the base case. BCs was responsible for over 30% of annual average mercury concentration and total deposition while NAT contributed around 15%. Among the anthropogenic sources, IP (22.9%) was dominant with a contribution over 20.0% and PP (18.9%) and MSWI (11.2%) ranked second and third. Results also showed that power plants were the most important emission sources in the central PRD, where the ultra-low emission for thermal power units need to be strengthened. In the northern and western PRD, cement and metal productions were priorities for mercury control. The fast growth of municipal solid waste incineration were also a key factor in the core areas. In addition, a coordinated regional mercury emission control was important for effectively controlling pollution. In the future, mercury emissions will decrease as control measures are strengthened, more attention should be paid to mercury deposition around the large point sources as high levels of pollution are observed. 展开更多

Although great accomplishments of functional material synthesis have been achieved in sodium ion batteries (SIBs) recently,there are still numerous challenges and problems in pre pari ng carb on-based materials with porous architectures and eno ugh lattice distance for Na' insertion.Herein we report a templated strategy to synthesize 3D porous graphene girds (PGGs) consisting of several stacking graphene structure with ultrahigh surface area and hierarchical connected structure by employing Ag nanoparticles (NPs).The Ag NPs will regenerate for decreasing the experimental cost,also in line with principles of green chemistry and environmentally friendly strategy.The PGGs obtain advanced specific capacity of 160mAhg^-1 at current density of 50mAhg Moreover,112mAhg^-1 capacity can be gained at 1 Ahg^-1 during 1000 cycles.Due to their porous arch lecture,ultrahigh surface area and low amorphous graphited structure,PGGs electrode showed the excellent electrochemical performance in high rate capability. 展开更多

Photocatalytic technology has been widely adopted to address the issue of air pollution. The separation of photogenerated carriers and the activation of reactants on catalyst surface are the main factors that affect the photocatalytic efficiency. Here, the phosphate/potassium (PO4/K) cofunctionalized carbon nitride (labeled as PO4-CN-K) was synthesized via a one-step in situ copyrolysis of thiourea and potassium phosphate. The unique electronic structure of PO4-CN-K could significantly improve the performance of photocatalytic NO purification. The enhanced activity of PO4-CN-K can be attributed to the promoted activation capacity for O2, NO and H2O on the catalyst surface, the decreased of carriers recombination, benefiting from the co-functionalization of phosphate groups on the surface of CN and the construction of K channels between CN layers. The photocatalytic NO conversion pathway is disclosed through time-dependent in situ FT-IR, indicating that PO4-CN-K can efficiently convert NO molecules into harmless nitrate via the NO→NO+→nitrate/nitrite routes. The research provides a novel strategy to impel the development of photocatalytic technology for efficient air purification. 展开更多

Quorum sensing(QS)regulation of the composition of ammonia-oxidising archaea(AOA)and ammonia-oxidising bacteria(AOB)communities and functions in wastewater treatment was investigated.Specifically,we explored the role of N-acyl-L-homoserine lactones(AHLs)in microbial community dynamics in activated sludge.On average,the specific ammoniaoxidising-rate increased from 1.6 to 2.8 mg NH4+-N/g MLSS/hr after treatment with long-chain AHLs for 16 days,and the addition of AHLs to sludge resulted in an increased number of AOA/AOB amoA genes.Significant differences were observed in the AOA communities of control and AHL-treated cultures,but not the AOB community.Furthermore,the dominant functional AOA strains of the Crenarchaeota altered their ecological niche in response to AHL addition.These results provide evidence that AHLs play an important role in mediating AOA/AOB microbial community parameters and demonstrate the potential for application of QS to the regulation of nitrogen compound metabolism in wastewater treatment. 展开更多

White sand heath forests(WS) or kerangas, an unusual variant of tropical forests in Borneo, characterized by open scrubby vegetation, low productivity, and distinctive plant species composition and soil microbial community, are regarded as a stressful lowpH and/or nutrient environment. We investigated whether the functional soil metagenome also shows a predicted set of indicators of stressful conditions in WS. Based on stress-tolerant strategies exhibited by larger organisms, we hypothesized that genes for stress tolerance, dormancy, sporulation, and nutrient processing are more abundant in the soil microbiota of WS. We also hypothesized that there is less evidence of biotic interaction in white sand soils, with lower connectivity and fewer genes related to organismic interactions. In Brunei, we sampled soils from a WS and a normal primary dipterocarp forest, together with an inland heath, an intermediate forest type. Soil DNA was extracted, and shotgun sequencing was performed using Illumina HiSeq platform, with classification by the Metagenomics Rapid Annotation using Subsystem Technology(MG-RAST). The results, on one hand, supported our hypothesis(on greater abundance of dormancy, virulence, and sporulation-related genes). However, some aspects of our results showed no significant difference(specifically in stress tolerance, antibiotic resistance, viruses, and clustered regularly interspaced short palindrome repeats(CRISPRs)). It appears that in certain respects, the extreme white sand environment produces the predicted strategy of less biotic interaction, but exhibits high soil microbiota connectivity and functional diversity. 展开更多

The results show that the C contents, C:N and C:P ratios of dominant species in the karst forest were lower than those in the non-karst forest, but the N and P and the N:P ratio were higher;C:N:P ratios in plant organs of trees in the karst forest were in the order of trunks>roots>branches>leaves. However, C:N:P ratio in the non-karst forest trees were trunks>branches>roots>leaves. Moreover, ratio of C:N:P in trunks was highest and lowest in leaves in both forests. In non-karst forest trees, N:P was in the order of leaves> roots>branches>trunks. There were no significant differences in the ratio of N:P in different plant components of trees in the karst forest. However, in karst and non-karst forest trees, the ratio of N:P in leaves was highest;positive correlations between N and P contents, and N and N:P ratios were observed in both karst and non-karst forests (p<0.001). Negative correlations between P and N:P ratios (p<0.05) were observed in karst forest trees, while positive correlations were observed in non-karst forest trees. 展开更多

Vertical heterostructures based on two-dimensional(2D)materials have attracted widespread interest for their numerous applications in electronic and optoelectronic devices.Herein,we report the direct construct!on of an abnormal graphene/ReSe2 stack on Au foils by a two-step chemical vapor deposition(CVD)strategy.During the second growth stage,mono layer ReSe2 is found to prefere ntially evolve at the irUerface between the first-grown graphene layer and the Au substrate.The unusual stacking behavior is unraveled by in-situ"cutting open"the upper graphene from the defects to expose the lower ReSe2 using scanning tunneling microscopy(STM).From combination of these results with density functional theory calculations,the domain boundaries and edge sites of graphene are proposed to be adsorption sites for Re and Se precursors,further facilitating the growth of ReSe2 at the van der Waals gap of graphene/Au.This work hereby offers an intriguing strategy for obtaining vertical 2D heterostructures featured with an ultra-clean interface and a designed stacking geometry. 展开更多

Dielectrophoresis(DEP)was combined with adsorption(ADS)to simultaneously and effectively remove Cd^2+ and Pb^2+ species from aqueous solution.To implement the process,bentonite particles of submicro-meter size were used to first adsorb the heavy metal ions.These particles were subsequently trapped and removed by DEP.The effects of the adsorbent dosage,DEP cell voltage and the capture pool numbers on the removal rate were investigated in batch processes,which allowed us to determine the optimal experimental conditions.The high removal efficiency,97.3% and 99.9% for Cd^2+ and Pb^2+,respectively,were achieved when the ions are coexisting in the system.The microstructure of bentonite particles before and after ADS/DEP was examined by scanning electron microscopy.Our results suggest that the dielectrophoresis-assisted adsorption method has a high capability to remove the heavy metals from wastewater. 展开更多

A series of mono-dispersed hexagon NaGdF4:Yb3+,Er3+@NaGdF4 core-shell nanoparticles with different shell thickness were synthesized via a co-precipitation method.Nanoparticles with high upconversion fluorescent emissions result in large signal-to-noise ratio,which guarantees the accuracy of the sensitivity.Besides,the maximum sensitivity of these NPs as detection film increases first and then decreases with the shell thickness increasing.When the shell thickness is 2.3 nm(NaGdF4-2),the maximum sensitivity(0.69959 ppm-1)is reached.A large degree of overlap between the rhodamine B absorption band and the Er3+green emission bands ensures that the NaGdF4:Yb3+,Er3+@NaGdF4 nanoparticles can be used as fluorescent probe to detect the concentration of rhodamine B based on fluorescent intensity ratio technology.The linear relationship between the rhodamine B concentration and the intensity ratio(R)of green and red emission intensity(IS+H and IF)were studied systematically.The result shows that the maximum sensitivity can be obtained in low concentration rhodamine B(<4 ppm),which is lower than the reported minimum detection concentration.Thus,the ultra-high sensitivity detection by NaGdF4:Yb3+,Er3+@NaGdF4 core-shell upconversion nanoparticles in low concentration can be realized,which provides promising applications in bio-detection filed. 展开更多

Potassium (K)and magnesium (Mg)levels and their balances are two factors affecting the growth of plant.However,the responses of different crop cultivars to K/Mg ratios are less clear.This study was aimed at assessing the different responses of tomato (Solanum Lycopersicum L.)cultivars to the different K/Mg supply ratios.Three tomato cultivars (Zhongza 9 (ZZ), Gailiangmaofen (MF),and Jinpengchaoguan (JP))were grown in pots with three different K^+/Mg^2+ ratios (4:0,4:1 and 8:1, represented by K/Mg4:0,K/Mg4:1,and K/Mg8:1,respectively).Compared with K/Mg4:1 treatment,the leaf chlorophyll content, net photosynthetic rate,and total biomass of tomato seedlings under K/Mg4:0 treatments were decreased by 69.7,89.1, and 53.1%,respectively.The Mg deficiency symptoms were observed when the Mg content in shoot became lower than 4 mg g^-1 DW.Compared with K/Mg4:1 treatment,total biomass of tomato seedlings of K/Mg8:1 treatment was decreased by 21.6%;the shoot and root Mg contents were decreased by 10.4 and 21.8%,respectively;and Mg uptake of tomato was reduced by 34.1%.There were significant differences in biomass and Mg uptake for the three cultivars between the different K^+/Mg^2+ treatments.The Mg uptake of the three different cultivars ranked as ZZ>JP>MF under Mg deficiency and high K condition.In conclusion,the growth and Mg uptake and allocation of tomato were influenced significantly by imbalance K and Mg supply.JP and ZZ were the cultivars with the highest efficiency in Mg uptake. 展开更多

China's water shortage situation is grim.Deep exploration of non-traditional water resources and relief of contradiction between China's economic development and water resources shortage is the only way to ensure the sustainable development of China.Urban sewage treatment and reclamation is a more stable and widely used method of non-traditional water resources development and utilization.However,urban centralized reclaimed water treatment faces many problems such as high transportation cost and difficulty in laying reusing pipe network.Relatively speaking,decentralized reclaimed water treatment technology has obvious advantages and is gradually getting more attention.In this research,three types of wastewater treatment process featured with urban decentralized low-carbon ecological technology have been mainly introduced.In addition,the operating data of relevant domestic and foreign engineering cases were analyzed from the perspectives of treatment effect,energy consumption level,applicable scale and occupied area,etc.This study considers that these three new sewage processes based on the principle of ecological engineering have the advantages of compact structure,small footprint,low water consumption,stable effluent quality,beautiful appearance and large applicable scale,and are worthy of researching and importing. 展开更多
